While Naomi Watts has garnered attention and a teensy bit of criticism for portraying the People’s Princess in Diana, Nicole Kidman is preparing to step into another iconic princess’ slippers: Grace Kelly. Though the teaser trailer for Olivier Dahan‘s Grace of Monaco is just a sliver of a minute long and could potentially be the world’s most expensive perfume commercial if you’re not paying too close of attention, it provides a beautiful little glimpse into what you expect a princess’ world to look like — rich and opulent. That opera music is just naturally occurring, too. They didn’t add that in during post.
The film takes place right after Kelly’s well-publicized marriage in the early 1960′s to Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth), during a political dispute between Rainier and France’s Charles De Gaulle that threatens a French invasion of Monaco. From the brief teaser, however, it appears that Princess Grace’s official duty is to always stand in soft lighting and look beautiful, which she does admirably.
With both Grace of Monaco and Diana hitting theaters in November, it will be interesting to see which royalty-based film gains more attention with audiences. My money’s on Diana — always stick with scandal.
Grace of Monaco is in theaters November 27th.
