Lauren’s Perfume Really Does Smell Like the Beach

The wet, icy weeks between the beginning of January and mid-March in New York are the absolute worst of the year. I spend the time counting down the days until the shortest day of the year (the very worst is over!) and buying resort clothes pretending that winter will end early and I’ll be able to wear them at any moment. You could say I’m proficient at self-distraction.

This winter, I added a new tool to my let’s-pretend-winter-isn’t-happening arsenal: CB I Hate Perfume’s At the Beach 1966 fragrance, which I first discovered at The Apartment in Soho this fall. At $100 for 15ml, it’s criminally expensive, but the smell — which somehow captures the water, the salt, the sand, even the sunscreen scents of the beach — is pure escapist heaven. And who wouldn’t pay $100 for a whiff of heaven?

The fragrance is sold out at The Apartment’s online store, but is still available at CB I Hate Perfume’s website.

CB I Hate Perfume At the Beach 1966, $100, available at cbihateperfume.com.

Greg Lauren, Barneys New York fete new designer fragrance

Actor, artist and fashion designer Greg Lauren unveiled his foray into the world of fragrance in Hollywood on Tuesday night -- against a backdrop of olive-drab Army tents, paint-splattered plywood floors and just beyond a paintbrush-wielding gentleman near the entrance who generously anointed arriving guests with a baptismal swath of blue paint.

Once inside, the guests, who had been provided white Greg Lauren overshirts on arrival, removed them and hung them on racks to dry (or, in some cases, have additional paint splattered on them) and were given claim tickets so they could take their one-of-a-kind spontaneous creations with them as they left.

As a way of hammering home Lauren's goal for the scent -- a Barneys New York collaboration -- it was a master (brush) stroke of genius.

"I wanted everyone to immediately and interactively engage in the artistic spirit," he said. "To have fun and feel what it's like to be the bottle."

Lauren was referring to the paint-splattered fragrance bottles, each one distressed by Lauren himself -- a torn label here, a bit of hand-sanding there -- and labeled with a simple piece of masking tape on which he'd written his name with a black Sharpie pen.

"I was so excited to sink my teeth into my natural territory, which is the packaging and the bottle," he said. "I wanted each person to feel like they were getting a little piece of art -- a little jewel -- so that they'd think: 'Wow, a person really touched this.'"

For the scent itself, Lauren turned to renowned perfumer Ralf Schweiger (his past efforts include Marc Jacobs Men and Yves St. Laurent Baby Doll), asking him to craft a fragrance that reflected some of the common themes in the artist's work.

"I wanted the contradictory themes of strength and vulnerability, pain and beauty," Lauren said. "I literally asked [Schweiger] if there was a scent that we could find that would make you cry and make you smile at the same time -- that’s what I wanted."

The result is a unisex fragrance described as "a combination of tonka beans, vanilla, and marine notes." Perhaps it was because Lauren had mentioned crying, but our first sniff gave us a distinct impression of salty and sweet and evoked the image of one's true love sitting in a scented bubble bath, warm tears streaming down her face and pooling atop a vanilla sundae.

Joining Lauren to celebrate the scent were his wife, actress and current "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Elizabeth Berkley; Berkley's "DWTS" dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy; Paula Abdul; Mariel Hemingway; artist Ally Hilfiger; shoemaker of the moment George Esquivel and LACMA chief executive and director Michael Govan and his wife, Katherine Ross.

Greg Lauren for Barneys New York is the second in the retailer's designer fragrance collection (the first, with L'Wren Scott, came out last November), and the 2,500 limited-edition 100-milliliter bottles are priced at $195 each and are available exclusively through Barneys.

New Fragrance: Illamasqua Freak Scarab (2013)

British makeup brand Illamasqua have launched a new perfume baptized Freak Scarab. It is their second release following up on Freak (2011) introducing a new composition whose only common olfactory signature with the former are the presence of a thick and dark davana note and queen of the night. Otherwise, the formula differs. Part of the name remains...

The name of the new scent takes inspiration from the strange, perpetual-and-proud-Halloween feel of the brand, alluding this time to a symbol of the Ancient Egyptians, the scarab or dung beetle embodying a cycle of eartly transformation paralelling heavenly transformation.

"Freak Scarab is the decadent new fragrance from Illamasqua. A unisex Extrait De Parfum, it enchants. Captivates. Corrupts."

"Let the age of indulgence be reborn"

You can also note that the famous vintage perfume base called "mousse de saxe" is featured in a modern adaptation form, which should be appealing to perfume wearers who prefer heftier fragrances like the Caron perfumes known for this famous perfumery base

Tyler’s New Favorite Fall Perfume

I often wish I was the type of person with a signature fragrance–I think those people are so sophisticated. But unfortunately, I’m kind of a perfume hoarder.

Perfume is my last step when I get ready, and I like to cycle my fragrances out based on how I feel that day, what the weather is like, where I’m going, things like that. Of course, it goes without saying that I also have to like the way it smells.

Lately I’ve been really into lady-like scents, and Estee Lauder’s new Modern Muse definitely fits the bill. I love the mix of florals with woodier scents for fall, but it’s light enough to wear to work and not fumigate the whole office

Sniff Test: Review of the fragrance Byredo 1996

"The scent is an olfactory snapshot not only of the image but of our emotional response to it," says Byredo founder Ben Gorham.

Photograph by: Handout , Byredo
This week's Sniff Test is Byredo 1996 ($170 for 50ml at Holt Renfrew). "The scent is an olfactory snapshot not only of the image but of our emotional response to it," says Byredo founder Ben Gorham. Dave Lackie and I take an honest whiff.

He Says:

There’s a trend in niche fragrances to go back to the earliest Givenchy, Chanel and Guerlain scents for inspiration. 1996 is such as scent. I smell strong patchouli notes at first sniff and make out cognac accents. But it is the amber that soon takes center stage. It’s interesting but smells a little ‘old’ for 2013. ★★ (out of 4)

She Says:

If we were well and truly transported back to 1996, what we would be smelling is probably the candy floss of Angel with a soupçon of CK one’s fresh androgyny. But in this case, the year references a photograph taken by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, ‘Kirsten 1996.’ The scent is just as personal – Ben Gorham originally formulated it as a Christmas gift, but by word of mouth, the private edition as proved popular enough to have a proper release. From the creamy vanilla and black amber floating under the sharper pong of juniper berries, smoky leather and tickling black pepper, you can see why. Rich, and quintessentially autumnal. ★★★

Burberry Brit Rhythm (2013): The Scent of Music Festivals {New Perfume} {Men's Cologne}

Original Article

Burberry will launch a new men's perfume from September 2013 called Burberry Brit Rhythm, which is inspired by the current popularity of music festivals, these revivalist 60s happenings. The media have been following these events with particular attention lately as they have proven to be fertile gounds for celebrity sightings, street fashion transported to the country fields of rock 'n roll, accessorily also, good music, and generally speaking, an upbeat atmosphere of happening youth culture and Beatnik revivalism...
Despite those informal references, the bottle for Brit Rhythm is sleek and urbane-looking, borrowing more from the polished fashion codes of the house. The jus however is meant to capture some of the raw energy of the music festivals' crowds.

The eau de toilette for men is described as being provocative, sexy and brimming with energy.

Composition opens on green fresh notes relying on accords of lemon, basil and verbena spiced up with juniper and cardamom. The sexy facet of the perfume rests on incense, sandalwood and warm tonka bean in the heart followed by a base of leather and patchouli.

This is the first fragrance that Burberry are creating in-house after they parted ways with Inter Parfums last spring, a move they had been mulling over since 2011. They are however following suit with the general policy at the house of being plugged into the contemporary musical culture of the young with an element of throwback nostalgia to the London of the Swinging 60s.

Masculine fragrance launches are usually less high profile than feminine ones, so picking a men's scent to start out on their new path of independent creation might be seen as a safer bet and a rehearsal for a big feminine launch.

Top Ten Awful-Smelling Perfumes

The fragrance is sweet but a little bit too powdery. Buyers who have sensitive skin are aware of its smell

Perfume plays an important role in the modern life of both male and female. Suppose that you attend a special event and sit behind one person who uses an elegant fragrance. You undoubtedly feel comfortable.

Choosing a suitable perfume is very important because it not only helps you feel well but also make people around you disturbed. For example, the classic perfume with flowery or citric may be appropriate to mid-age women while strong scent is preferred by the young.

However, there are some kinds of perfume that feature awful scents though their prices are not cheap like Gucci by Gucci, Tocca Stella Eau De Parfum, Avon Timeless Cologne Spray, Harajuku Lovers Lil Angel Eau de Toilette Spray, Aveda Pure-Fume Essence and Lancome Magnifique Eau de Parfum.

First Response-Boston Perfume Offends

A New York perfume manufacturer has come under scrutiny for selling a new firefighter-inspired perfume, First Response-Boston, by those who believe the scent capitalizes on April's tragic bombing at the Boston Marathon, reports ABC News.

Demeter Fragrance Library launched the new perfume, which incorporates the smell of smoke and rubber, on May 18, a month after the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three and injured 264 people.

Demeter Fragrance Library, which describes itself as a fragrance company with 250 smells that are “inspired by everyday objects and experiences,” is now selling a scent that could certainly be described as “Boston Strong.”

"We have an unusual approach to fragrances; we're constantly looking for things that resonate. We originally wanted to create a perfume for the New York City fire department, but after the events in Boston we decided to tailor the perfume for the Boston firefighters," says Demeter CEO Mark D. Crames, who has lived in the Boston area.

Nevertheless, some Bostonians are not pleased.

"It's pretty soon after the incident to sell a perfume like that," says Boston resident Lauren Passaro, 21. "I think it's pretty insensitive."

Hayley Gundlach of Norwood, Mass., was working at Sugar Heaven, a Boston candy store located at the marathon's finish line, when she heard the blast outside the storefront. "It was pretty stressful. I was and still am pretty shaken up. For a time I was afraid to go outside by myself. Unexpected loud noises made me jump."

"To me, it's a little offensive to try to put the tragedy in a bottle. The first responders weren't just firefighters but also police officers and runners."

As Gundlach suggests, the perfume could have adverse effects on those who witnessed the tragedy. "That smoke smell is so particular to that day that it can be a trigger for a lot of people emotionally; it strikes me as odd that they would include it."

Crames denies trying to turn a profit with the perfume.

On other news, reviews are already in on the fragrance, which users have said is “not for the faint of heart,” and is very “masculine” in nature, but also gives off, “a long lasting fragrance” that they would recommend to their friends.

Smells Like a Million Bucks For Just 15 Dollars

I'm not sure it's possible to convey how much I love Demeter's brand new Rice Paddy fragrance in a single blog post. Perhaps an interpretive dance would help. No, no, I'll spare you my rhythmic stylings and just tell you this: It's not like anything perfume you've ever smelled before and everything about it is amazing. Oh, and like all Demeter fragrances, it's just $15.

CEO Mark Crames came up with the the mix of young, green shoots, rice and water after hanging out by a living rice paddy outside a Taiwanese factory. He says, "At the first chance I slipped away and spent 30 minutes contemplating that paddy and inhaling its scent. It was that experience I tried to capture in this fragrance.”
And capture it he did. Now, I know you might be thinking that it smells like the inside of a rice cooker, but that's not it at all—there is an element of rice in there, but the best way I can describe the scent is toasted sweet heaven. It's a mix of savory, caramelized and totally fresh. I'm obsessed. So if you're looking for a new spring fragrance, go take a whiff and see what you think. I won't mind if you guys are walking around smelling like me at all—the more things that smell this delicious, the better.

The Skinny On Mary Greenwell Plum

It is somehow human nature to think if there is something out there that you cannot easily get it must be great. When there is a limited edition fragrance exclusive to a store hundreds of miles away, or on another continent, we believe this mysterious elixir to be THE ONE! If only we could find it close to home. If only I could try this I could lie down a happy person. Such is the pull of the seemingly unobtainable. Mary Green is an Icon and Make up Artist to Princess Diana and a wealth of beautiful models and celebrities. Her first fragrance Plum is a gorgeous fragrance created by 4th generation perfumer Francois Robert.

A seductive, deeply nuanced perfume that floats gently on the skin and leaves a bubble of femininty and seductiveness without the overpowering musk or overly sweet notes that dominate the current market. It is a timeless fragrance,

The short answer is Mary Greenwell Plum is not a chypre by any way I understand the term. It is in my way of categorizing things a straight-up fruity floral. When it comes to that category it is a very good example of a fruity floral done correctly. As a reviewer I had to let go of some of the, to my mind, overheated praise and judge it based on everything else. With that qualifier Mary Greenwell succeeds as a fruity floral and fails completely as a chypre. Depending on what you are expecting, fruity floral or chypre, will tilt the way you feel about Mary Greenwell Plum.

Mary Greenwell Plum has outstanding longevity and above average sillage. PLUM is everything I'm looking for in a perfume. It deserves its name as it starts and continues with a delicious juicy plum note only to be deepened and enriched by well-blended white florals. I honestly had low expectations for this due to the recent negative reviews. But NO! This is just beautiful beyond words. I almost feel drunk when I smell this on my skin! Highly recommended for plum lovers who can also tame those big white floral  10 out of 10 is what many have given it. I really liked the early going of Mary Greenwell Plum and wished they had never used the words chypre in their description because it created expectations. As it is Mary Greenwell Plum is an excellent fruity floral and if you love those kind of fragrances it is worth seeking out. If you are looking for a modern chypre I would advise against looking for it here.
