What happens when a woman wears Axe fragrance for a week?

Probably if I had watched the commercials first, I would never have undertaken this whole stupid experiment.

Axe commercials? Awful. They are the media equivalent of the fragrance itself. I mean, naked ladies covered in tiny congruent triangles assault bemused middle managers. These are commercials that could have been made backstage at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show, if angels really liked feathers in their strawberry milkshakes.

Nor did I come to Axe men’s fragrance by sniffing the air at the U.S. Supreme Court, which I cover. Me, I discovered Axe the usual way, through my 13-year-old nephew, for whom the whole prospect of a lifetime of boom-chicka-wah-wah is perhaps still too much to contemplate.

My own boys, at 8 and 10, are too young for Axe, or for fragrance, or for wah-wahs of any variety — or so I shall insist to myself until they are about 40. But after a single day at the beach in August, when they shared a bathroom with their big hockey-playing, Axe-scented cousin/hero, even the 8-year-old was smearing his small hairless self with the body wash, deodorant and spray cologne.

Dinners quickly became unbearable, with three Axe-drenched young people fogging up all tastes and smells. On it went, until the final weekend at the beach, when I found myself trapped in the shower with only a bottle of three-in-one Axe (shampoo, body-wash and conditioner). So I broke down and used it.

It was the most sublimely powerful fragrance experience of my adult life. Truly. After decades of smelling like a flower or a fruit, for the first time, I smelled like teen boy spirit. I smelled the way an adolescent male smells when he feels that everything good in the universe is about to be delivered to him, possibly by girls in angel wings. I loved it. I wanted more.

When I told my husband that I was planning to wear only Axe men’s products for an entire week, his answer was a foreshadowing of things to come: “You’re planning on wearing that stuff to bed every night for a week? Man. Axe really does work. It’s only been a few minutes and look, you’re already single again …”

WATCH: One Direction's Full 'Our Moment' Ad Is Here!

Ahh, it's Christmas in August! After a few teasers that left us sufficiently teased, the full ad for One Direction's first fragrance, "Our Moment," was released today and boy, oh boy, do we have a lot to discuss.

The video's soundtrack, which in four-second snippets sounded very Christmas-y and Tim Burton-y, is actually "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music because—guess what!—this perfume smells like all of Liam, Louis, Zayn, Niall, and Harry's fave things (minus me, I guess). The video begins with each lad smelling something: Liam has berries, Harry has flowers, Louis has a grapefruit, Niall has a bunch of vials filled with scent samples, and Zayn has white flower petals. While the first part of the video is calm and full of the boys deeply inhaling their favorite smells, the second part gets loco: Harry and Louis dump a bucket of petals on Zayn's head, Harry can't smell his flower because Liam is directing a heavy-duty fan in his direction, Louis squirts the grapefruit into his eye (and then rubs it into his face?), and poor Niall gets tricked into smelling Liam's feet. There's a lot of spinning: chairs, an extremely large grapefruit, bodies - things are chaotic. Good thing all those scents were bottled together, since the boys are having trouble smelling them solo. Finally, they gather 'round as Zayn places the pink bottle on a pedestal, only to have Louis take it and run. Guess Louis' ultimate favorite thing is their perfume? I hope he doesn't spray it on his face and then rub it around like he did with his grapefruit.

Make Your Own Cologne

The natural soaps and detergents industry has gotten quite creative in recent years when concocting their fragrances. Grapefruits and sandalwood lend their scents to laundry powders and eucalyptus and tea tree castile soaps have found their way into my shower. I recently came across a new favorite dish soap — lavender bergamot — that, with its decidedly woodsy aroma, turned my mind to men’s cologne. (Find out how to make floral-based perfumes, if that sounds more like you.)

Do men’s fragrances need to be the ultra-bold, musky, often toxic chemical soups found at the department store? With my smell-palette tuned to natural aromas, I was inspired to try concocting my own natural colognes for friends and family using essential oils. (Of course you can make your own laundry soap or dishwashing detergent, but that’s for another day.)

Understand Fragrance Families

Fragrances can be divided into a number of categories or “families.” In order to have success in cologne alchemy, you need to determine which fragrance families are your favorites. Here are the four main families:

Animal musks are often overpoweringly strong and can smell rancid if sniffed on their own. For this reason, they are used in minute amounts in store-bought colognes to impart a “dark note of primitive, exotic mystery,” as M.T. McLeod writes in her article on home perfume making.

Spicy or woodsy smells come from bitter tree and spice sources, such as clove and cinnamon. Oak, cedar, myrrh, and roots and barks lend their aromas to this group. Just a touch of cinnamon packs a big punch to muffins or cereals and it will do the same for colognes.

Herbaceous fragrances smell fresh, green and “foody.” Citrus, lavender, camphor, and eucalyptus are just a few of the herbal scents in this family group and they can add a briskness to your colognes. Many commercial colognes are based on the herb family of scents.

Scientists believe that our sense of smell is strongly tied to our memory. If you've ever walked past a guy wearing JOOP! and had a sobering flashback to a purposely forgotten high school hook-up, you know this.

And just as your eighth-period crush has since expanded his fragrance roster, so have you, most likely. You probably have at least a few perfumes that you associate with certain times in your life, and smelling any of the above will likely trigger tons of (hopefully positive!) memories. Let's reminisce. Here's a look back at my signature scents at every stage of life—I can't wait to hear yours.

Middle School: Love's Baby Soft
I was strongly influenced by an ad in a teen magazine in which The Hot Guy in a fictional high school proclaims how much he loves his girlfriend's Love's Baby Soft perfume. This smell takes me back to the awkwardness of those early dates that your mom had to drive you to. [Smells like: baby powder]

High School: L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons
What 16-year-old spends $100 on perfume? This kid right here. I went shopping armed with birthday money and blew it all on this fragrance because it was so pretty. And pink. And French. In my defense, I still have that same bottle to this day, which is somehow not empty yet and still smells fresh as the day I bought it. Every time I wear it, I flash back to being 16, which is a precious gift for anyone who's hit the big 3-0. [Smells like: pink flowers]

College: Aquolina Pink Sugar
This was probably when my interest in sugary smells began. I sampled this at my local Sephora and then wore it religiously in college. It takes me back to all the fun times in college—and reminds me of a certain roomie who was known to steal a spritz whenever I'd leave the room (you know who you are). [Smells like: sugar + pink pepper]

Post-College: Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Abricot
What club soda is to mixed drinks, this perfume is to my collection. It goes well with everything, so I alternated wearing it alone and wearing it mixed with other stuff I loved to sweeten it up. This one makes me think of all the nights out I had when I first moved into NYC. [Smells like: candied apricots]

Current Favorite: Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb
There's a reason this perfume is a best-seller. It's the perfect blend of spicy and sweet, and every guy I know seems to love it. It also smells like a more "grown-up" version of other scents I've worn before. [Smells like: spicy vanilla]

Jimmy Choo launches fruity/floral flanker of flagship perfume

Jimmy Choo, famed for its ultra-high-end women's shoes, has disclosed the details of its third fragrance, a limited-edition flanker of its very first perfume. Directly inspired by the luscious leathers of the brand's collections, this new fruity/floral essence hits the market August 1.

The limited-edition Exotic fragrance was developed by professional perfumers Olivier Polge, Domitille Bertier and Véronique Nyberg. The fragrance builds on a harmonious blend of tiger orchid and patchouli, seasoned with gourmet hints of cassis sorbet, pink grapefruit, raspberry and passion fruit.

"Intoxicating and sexy, Exotic targets a strong but mischievous personality, a woman possessed of an irresistible magnetism who wows everyone she crosses paths with," envisions Sandra Choi, creative director at Jimmy Choo.

The flacon reprises the shape of the original bottle but is a bright fuchsia. Its case likewise reprises the original python print in shades of orange, pink, black and white.

The Exotic eau de toilette will be selling from August 1 exclusively at Sephora and Jimmy Choo stores for €60 per 60 ml bottle.

Spritz Your Room With an Oversize Perfume

The ultradeluxe French candle company Cire Trudon has been scenting the air with their decadent candles since 1643. Various French nobles including Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Antoinette were dedicated clients. What’s the perfect 500th birthday gift for the state that has everything? Turns out it’s right under our noses.

Florida, you now have an official state perfume.

The names of the ingredients mixed to evoke our redolent state are perfume to the ears: ylang-ylang, Valencia orange blossoms, lilies, chili pepper, cloves, green tea, geranium and white musk. “The spicy fragrance with citrus notes is seductive and elegant,” says its creator, French master perfumer Christian Louis.

It was Ariz Bousaid’s idea to salute the state via scent. And the owner of Salon Zizou in Maitland knew just the perfumer to produce the magical elixir: her Parisian friend Louis, whom she had introduced to Florida. She brought him to the “Francophile: All Things French” event at the Orlando Museum of Art last summer, and he fell madly in love with the Sunshine State.

“I tried to create a perfume that leaves a memory of Florida,” Louis says. The elegant bottles are sprinkled with suns, stars, orange blossoms and birds drawn by French children asked to illustrate Florida. The pearly glass invokes moonstone to pay homage to the state’s history of space exploration.

The perfume has been licensed to use the state’s Viva Florida 500 logo, allowing Louis “to brand with us and commemorate France’s historic relationship with Florida,” says Rachel Basan Porter, special programs coordinator in the Department of State’s Office of the Deputy Secretary for Cultural, Historical and Information Programs. One bottle of “Florida” was donated to the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee.

New Perfume For Men Charriol Royal White

In May 2013 the house of Charriol is launching the new fragrance for men, Royal White. The fragrance is available in a milky white bottle with a beautiful stopper in gold color. The new fragrance is part of the Royal collection and is inspired by a generous man full of spirit, a sensual esthete. He likes airiness and timelessness and wants to be surrounded with luxury. White is his favorite color because it reminds him of a magnificent villa decorated with white furniture and of the yacht sailing on the Mediterranean Sea.

The reportedly "particularly sophisticated" and "addictive" perfume, which is also said to be both "radiant" and "rich" was inspired by a definite palette of symbolic colors, "White and gold are his colors and the colors of his world; he loves their radiance and timelessness."

The woody-floral eau de parfum appears to have been devised to appeal to the tastes of the Middle Eastern clientèle as well as to men who enjoy Orientalist perfumes as can be felt from the description of the universe of the Royal White man, and from the mix of fragrance notes hinting at a modernized conception of oud-based perfumes.

The scent opens on top notes of fresh grapefruit and fruity, tangy rhubarb leading to a heart featuring an Oriental rose, white patchouli and violet blossom. The sillage is said to be intense, resting on deeper notes of oud wood, oakmoss and vetiver.

Royal White by Charriol is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. This is a new fragrance. Royal White was launched in 2013. The nose behind this fragrance is Annick Menardo. Top notes are grapefruit and rhubarb; middle notes are rose, violet and patchouli; base notes are agarwood (oud), oakmoss and vetiver.

Warm weather and the first buds of spring have been slow to arrive in much of the country. But even if your garden has yet to grow, you can add beauty, fragrance and a sense of springtime to your home by decorating with lush plants and potted trees.

Decorating with plants “kind of fell out of vogue” for a time, says California-based interior designer Molly Luetkemeyer. “It was such a ’70s thing, or I think people associated it with the ’70s,” but it’s become popular again.

Today, “designer spaces pretty much always include some element of life,” says interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of decordemon.com. “While that can be anything from coral to tortoise shells, pressed leaves or even a tiny bowl with a goldfish, the most common way to add life is with potted plants and trees.”

Guerlain Launchs a new Aqua Allegoria

Guerlain have launched a new Aqua Allegoria this spring of 2013 baptized Nerolia Bianca. Founded in 1999, as a collection of fresh eaux, it has seen a number of additions over the years so far retaining four in the permanent lineup: Pamplelune, Herba Fresca, Mandarine Basilic and Lys Soleia. The new jus, which pays homage to the bitter orange tree, was composed by in-house perfumer Thierry Wasser...

It might be of interest to note that in the past Jean-Paul Guerlain had composed a neroli perfume entitled Flora Nerolia for this collection for which he had a particular liking, but which was discontinued.

Wasser explained, "In Aqua Allegoria I can guess at the world of a perfumer-gardener, of a collector of smells, of a nature which is disciplined with artistry and a lot of respect, of seasonal life. I would also add the words poetry and liberty. A liberty of tone and position, a liberty of genre and style. To be freely worn, and which was freely composed..."

The composition features all of the different materials that are derived from the orange tree, which is nicknamed "the pig of perfumery" as it can be used in such a versatile fashion.

Perfume notes include bitter orange, orange blossom, neroli, petit grain, peppermint, ylang, white musks, white amber, and cedar wood.

Nerolia Bianca was reportedly conceived so as to feel as fresh as an Eau de Cologne, as intense as an eau de parfum, yet as mysterious as a skin scent.

Lipstick-Like Le Soft Perfume is New Brand of Fragrances

A new French brand of perfume-in-a-stick is born called Le Soft Perfume. At their helm are the same people who created the concept previously branded as Crazy Libellule and the Poppies: Isabelle Masson-Mandonnaud and Philippe Vignong.

Their first offerings amount to 10 in a series entitled Le Petit Fou (The Little Crazy One) and whimsically called Emballe-Moi, Striptease Flowers, Rock, Umabel, Nemamiah, Zazou, Copacabana, La Reine Soleil, Lucky Bay, Etre Ici ou Ailleurs...

For the export market they have 6 among these which have been made available.

The sticks made out of shea butter, Monoï, Tamanu and Mango butter have been dermatologically tested and are alcohol-free, which is a boon for the summery days.

Rock for instance features notes of bergamot, lemon, orange followed by a heart of cedar and amber resting on a base of sandalwood, oud, leather accord, praline, patchouli, musk.

Striptease Flowers includes notes of bergamot, mandarin with a heart of orange blossom and neroli and a base of patchouli, amber, caramel and vanilla.

Smelling good without a perfume

Everyone likes to smell nice, but not everyone wants to wear perfume. Some people are allergic to it, the scents give some a headache and some can’t handle a smell quite that strong while some can’t just afford it.

Scented Lotion: Scented lotions are a great alternative to perfumes. You can get a lotion that smells like just about anything – even that amazing perfume you can’t afford. If you want a light, barely there scent, you can find that as well. The best part is, you’ll be moisturized as well, so your skin will be soft and supple, and sweet smelling all day long!

Body Spray Body sprays are also a great alternative but it can be overpowering, so you have to be careful. They are way cheaper than most perfumes and you can find a great one to suit your budget. However, be careful about what kind of spray you choose, and remember that just a few pumps will do the trick. Do not over-spray it!

Powders Another great alternative is Powder. Babies smell so sweet and fresh every time you pick them up because of the baby powder constantly sprinkled on them. You can also get that kind of fresh smell with some powders. Apart from making you smell good, a sprinkling of powder will help keep you cooler in the heat. You can go natural or look for something that’s like a perfume. Loads of scented powders can be found in the market and the smell is not as overpowering as sprays or lotions.

Body Wash If you don’t want a heavy scent but you do want a fragrance to linger on your skin, then scented body wash might be the answer. It can linger long after you’re out of the shower, but it’s in no way overpowering. You can also look for complementary lotions and/or body sprays in the scent you prefer. Judith Leiber Exotic Coral ~ new perfume

Handbag & accessories designer Judith Leiber will launch Exotic Coral, a new fresh fruity floriental, in April. Notes include clementine, key lime, rum, sea breeze accord, jasmine, violet leaves, tiare, sandalwood, coconut milk and heliotrope. Exotic Coral will be available in 40 and 75 ml Eau de Parfum.

Like the other four fragrances of the brand Judith Leiber, Night, Amethyst and Topaz, the flacon mimics the shape of one of their richly bejeweled art-deco evening clutches for which they are famous among the glitzy and public-life set...

In the image of their ornate evening bags, the perfume promises to smell on the opulent side.

The fruity-floral oriental was developed by Firmenich. It opens on top notes of clementine, key lime, rum, and a sea breeze accord. The floral heart features jasmine, violet leaves and Tiare flower. The creamy base notes include sandalwood, coconut milk and heliotrope.

Expect to see it from April 2013. Available in 40 ml and 75 ml.
