Why it's Best not to Wear Perfume Nor Take the Pill when Looking for a Mate

Fine perfume might be more intellectual and spiritual in nature than instinctual after all. A few years back - in 2008 - there were a series of articles on olfaction and attraction shedding light on enduring sexual attraction thanks to new research on the role of the contraceptive pill. It is required reading if you wish to grasp some of the potentially thwarted "chemistry" at work when choosing not only a compatible mate, but a long-term one...

The research resulted in the practical advice not to be on the contraceptive pill when dating - and even in order to perfect the approach, not to wear fragrances in the first few weeks of getting to know someone so as to be able to olfactorily ascertain the soundness of the basis for your sexual attraction. It has to do with MHC genes compatibility - they should be not too similar, but not too dissimilar as well. These are as unique as a finger prints so there are no obvious visual predictors such as the color of skin, or race. Only your nose will tell, provided no pill is involved and perfumes do not blur the olfactory message too much although a link has been found between perfume preferences and the Major histocompatibility complex. If you and someone else consistently show similar cologne preferences, this tends to mean you have similiar MHC genes, and so are not biologically compatible actually. They should stay great buddies of yours.

Masik Collegiate Fragrances Introduces School-Spirited Scents

 Masik Collegiate Fragrances

Ever had a scent remind you of school? Masik, a fragrance line for colleges, recently developed a collection that takes beauty lovers back to their undergrad and graduate days.

The brand's one-of-a-kind eau de toilettes are designed to make one recall the memories, traditions, sporting events and hours on campus that made college special. Masik worked with some of the biggest universities in the country, from Florida State, to Texas A & M, to Penn State. Their goal, you ask? The rising company wanted to create an official men's cologne and women's perfume for each school.

CEO Katie Masik explained just why the bouquets make the perfect presents. "People, myself included, are uniquely passionate about their Alma Maters, and about the college/university in their community, which is why I believe your school's signature scent is the perfect gift for the student, alumni or fan in your life," explained Katie in a PR Newswire press release.

What sets Masik's fragrances apart from others is that they are inspired by unique elements of each school. The colors, campus style, flowers, trees, traditions and locations all served as muses. The burgeoning business created these scents by pitching their perfumers a 'fragrance brief' that outlined these "school-specific" elements, such as pictures of the university's students. Once they zeroed in on scent options, each university conducted sessions to determine which aromas they like best.

Women and men can treat themselves to the brand's 1.7 oz./50 ml bottle for $39.50. To purchase the fragrances, visit Masik's online shop at Masik.com. You can also track down the bouquets at Belk's department store and on their website, as well as search for a local retailer. We Got Our Noses On George Takei’s Punnily-Named Perfume

You might have noticed that we don’t really do a lot of perfume reviews on The Mary Sue. Or any. That’s our sister site Styleite‘s thing. But when we were offered the chance to review Eau My, George Takei‘s foray into perfumery, we couldn’t say no. Could you? So, after a quick primer from Styleite on how the heck you even review perfume in the first place, we went around the office with a sample and asked for opinions.

“Notes of citrus… might be because I just ate that grapefruit, though. No, there really is citrus. Citrus and clove.”
“Men’s soap, a really clean dude right after he’s gotten out of the shower. I just want to bury my face in this.”
“Sweet aerosol.”
“The first floor of Bloomingdale’s.”
“It smells like something I should like, but don’t.”
“Wintery men’s cologne.”
“Grapefruit finish.” (Upon me asking “…finish?”: “It’s like the end of the smell. I know perfume words.”)
“Has all the notes that you’d associate with a men’s perfume, but it’s still kind of… fruity.” (Note: That is meant literally. Any perceived pun is unintentional. JSYK.)

And finally, from Glen over at Geekosystem:
“This should smell like George Takei. They should collect his sweat and put it in a bottle.”

Pitbull to Debut Unisex Fragrance Line

Pitbull will be ringing in the new year with a fresh scent. The rapper will unveil his new fragrance, simply called Pitbull, on Dec. 31.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the 32-year-old artist will present his men’s and women’s scents at his New Year’s Eve show in his hometown of Miami at American Airlines Arena. Pre-sales will begin Dec. 1 at Amazon.com, which will be selling the scent exclusively until Valentine’s Day.

“When we started talking about it, it was about very sexy smells,” says Pitbull about his fragrance. “The woman can wear the men’s cologne and the man can wear the women’s perfume. I love to mix [men's and women's fragrances] up and see what kind of people you attract…I am a walking focus group.”

The women’s fragrance is described as notes of raspberries, crisp red apples, nectarine blossom, jasmine, vanilla and musk. Meanwhile, the men’s version smells like an “opening act” of sun-drenched bergamot, mandarin and sage; and “an encore” of rich tonka bean, musk and amber.

The fragrances will come in tall bottles shaped by the skyscrapers Pitbull saw while traveling to exotic locations like Malaysia, Dubai and Shanghai. Prices range from $30-$55 depending on bottle size.

And since Pitbull is an international artist, limited edition versions are in the works as well, including Pitbull Miami, due out in 2015, and Pitbull Rio, aimed for 2016. Pitbull London and Pitbull Berlin are also in the planning stages.

“I think that a soft, sexy sensual scent isn’t what people are going to expect from me,” Mr. 305 tells WWD. “The innovative part of that is when you have a man who comes with a scent which I would say is more womanly, I think that’s innovative, especially when you have a man who will admit it.”

What happens when a woman wears Axe fragrance for a week?

Probably if I had watched the commercials first, I would never have undertaken this whole stupid experiment.

Axe commercials? Awful. They are the media equivalent of the fragrance itself. I mean, naked ladies covered in tiny congruent triangles assault bemused middle managers. These are commercials that could have been made backstage at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show, if angels really liked feathers in their strawberry milkshakes.

Nor did I come to Axe men’s fragrance by sniffing the air at the U.S. Supreme Court, which I cover. Me, I discovered Axe the usual way, through my 13-year-old nephew, for whom the whole prospect of a lifetime of boom-chicka-wah-wah is perhaps still too much to contemplate.

My own boys, at 8 and 10, are too young for Axe, or for fragrance, or for wah-wahs of any variety — or so I shall insist to myself until they are about 40. But after a single day at the beach in August, when they shared a bathroom with their big hockey-playing, Axe-scented cousin/hero, even the 8-year-old was smearing his small hairless self with the body wash, deodorant and spray cologne.

Dinners quickly became unbearable, with three Axe-drenched young people fogging up all tastes and smells. On it went, until the final weekend at the beach, when I found myself trapped in the shower with only a bottle of three-in-one Axe (shampoo, body-wash and conditioner). So I broke down and used it.

It was the most sublimely powerful fragrance experience of my adult life. Truly. After decades of smelling like a flower or a fruit, for the first time, I smelled like teen boy spirit. I smelled the way an adolescent male smells when he feels that everything good in the universe is about to be delivered to him, possibly by girls in angel wings. I loved it. I wanted more.

When I told my husband that I was planning to wear only Axe men’s products for an entire week, his answer was a foreshadowing of things to come: “You’re planning on wearing that stuff to bed every night for a week? Man. Axe really does work. It’s only been a few minutes and look, you’re already single again …”

Greg Lauren on His Foray Into Fragrance

With his fifth ready-to-wear collection behind him, the 43-year-old L.A. artist-turned-designer Greg Lauren will make his fragrance industry debut on Tuesday, when his namesake unisex fragrance hits shelves at the Barneys New York flagship on Madison Avenue. “I thought this would have the same emotional themes that I’d want to express in my collection, which never feels like a fragment is made for men and another for women,” said Lauren, a nephew of Ralph Lauren. The exclusive scent is the second in the luxury department store’s designer fragrance collection, which started in 2012 with a L’Wren Scott creation. Made by the New York perfumer Ralf Schwieger, whose work includes Lipstick Rose by Frédéric Malle and Eau des Merveilles by Hermès, the blend’s sweet aroma is built around tonka beans, vanilla and coconut, offset by a musky veil of sandalwood, amber and moss.

“In working directly with an artist, it is up to me to translate his ideas and emotions into a scent,” said Schwieger, who used a visit to Lauren’s showroom as a jumping-off point for the fragrance. “Once I have a feel for the scent and the basic structure is in place, I have to fine-tune it, like working on a sculpture.” And the final product is a work of art, literally: Lauren decorated each bottle so that no two are the same. Here, he reflects on what he learned from the process, his favorite ingredients and whether he plans to expand his new footing in the beauty industry.

What was your first experience with fragrance?
It was absolutely Ralph Lauren Polo. That was the first time I was exposed to the power of something. The imagery is so iconic and so classic. It’s one of the greatest smells out there. I later used my wife’s perfume Comptoir Sud Pacifique in the Vanille Abricot or Vanille Extreme scents, which she has been wearing for 15 years. Right now, I’m going through the Greg Lauren for Barneys New York prototype tester bottles. It’s funny, I’ll think: “Yeah, this one had too much pear, but I’m gonna go with it.”

Masik Collegiate Fragrances beginning to develop UT cologne

So now, freshmen guys can smell great with hints of rose, apple and vanilla while pledging a fraternity. Girls are pretty particular about their perfumes, so it could be a hard sell for the gals.

Soon you may be able to smell like a Texas Longhorn.

UT is in talks with Masik Collegiate Fragrances to develop a school scent that could be released by the end of this year. Masik markets cologne and perfume lines for 10 universities in the U.S. including Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma and Penn State. The company also recently released a line with Waseda University in Japan.

The UT Office of Trademark Licensing declined to comment because an agreement with Masik is still in the works as the company goes through the University’s licensing process.

According to the company’s website, Masik looks at various aspects of a university when developing its scent - such as colors, traditions, architecture, and college town atmosphere. Katie Masich, the company’s founder and president, said although UT’s scent is still in development, she and her perfumers have already started looking at what smells should be included in the UT line.

“If you could bottle burnt orange and white, what would that smell like?” Masich said. “We looked at aromatics like orange, mandarin, ginger, orange blossom, vanilla, something to capture that burnt orange quality.”

Seth Kornegay Launches Unisex Petra Perfume that Crosses into the Epicurean World by Including Islay Single Malt Whiskey

African-American perfumer Seth Kornegay's new fragrance is one of his most unique and sure to interest foodies - it includes Islay single malt scotch whiskey from the southernmost portion of the Inner Hebridean Islands located off the west coast of Scotland.

The new unisex fragrance from luxury perfumer Seth Kornegay is sure to intrigue food and wine lovers. At $365 for a 1.7 oz bottle, Petra is one of the rarest and most interesting fragrances offered by Seth Kornegay, as it uniquely includes Islay single malt whiskey from the southernmost portion of the Inner Hebridean Islands located off the west coast of Scotland. The new unisex perfume expands the boundaries of traditional fragrance ingredients and tumbles over into the epicurean world. Islay single malt whiskey is known for its smoky character derived from peat, along with a hint of seaweed and salt, which many describe as a medicinal flavor. This enhances Petra and mixes well with the unisex perfume's sensual amber notes melded with alpine freshness and a combination of white and dark wood notes blended with exotic, wild northern herbs and rare barks.

"Petra is one of the most interesting fragrances we have ever created," said Seth Kornegay. "Islay malts are very distinctive and their smoky or saltiness along with hints of vanilla and dried fruit notes really make Petra a luxury perfume catering to the high-end consumer."

Virginia Tech Is Making Perfume And Cologne Now Everyone

Virginia is for Lovers and people who like perfume.

Everyone wants to smell like a hokie, right? Right. Well, if you're a Virginia Tech student, or alumnus, or hanger-on, you'll soon be able to do just that. VT is developing fragrances for men and women.

So starting in August, all the faceless poon you lure back to your room when you're blacked out will ostensibly smell the same, too. Masik Collegiate Fragrances, which is reportedly an actual thing, has set up camp inside the Blacksburg bookstore and is testing different perfumes on the kids. This sounds like a historically terrible idea, but Masik is getting a lot of support. On Friday, students still on campus tested a bunch of different scents, three of which will be chosen for each gender.

It's pomposity in its highest form, but let's be honest. It'll probably be a hit.

New Oud-Based Natural Leather Perfume by Osmia Organics

In time for Father's Day, this unisex scent, based on the smell of wet leather, is a unique, artisan gift handmade in Colorado.

Carbondale, CO (PRWEB) June 03, 2013

For centuries, perfumers have been intrigued by the smell of leather - comforting, exotic, sensual, warm, and right on the line between masculine and feminine. A pair of brand new boots, or an old, leather-bound book, or a pair of gloves worn thin by physical work - all of these are held together by the primitive, softly sweet smell of leather. Ironically, the concept of a leather scent arose from the need to perfume leather gloves in the 16th century in France, when the tanning process left leather with a pungent, harsh odor. Precious oils such as rose, musk, and ambergris were then used to mask that odor. Eventually, as the gloves were worn and the oils were heated and combined, the concept of a leather perfume was born.

For Osmia Organics founder, Dr. Sarah Villafranco, the concept of a leather scent arose when she unintentionally got a leather bracelet wet. She was intrigued by an intermittent, mystery scent as she worked that day, and finally realized it was the wet leather bracelet she was smelling. She began work on Couro that day. Says Villafranco, "Creating a modern leather scent with only natural essences was a challenge I couldn't resist - my brain kept rearranging the formula in my sleep, and I tweaked it for months until it was right. I wanted a perfume that would be somewhat masculine, but still completely alluring when worn by both men and women."

Today, Osmia is releasing the new, natural perfume. Oud, or agarwood, is one of the world's most precious and costly fragrance ingredients, long revered as a sacred oil for use in anointing blends. Couro combines oud with amber and tobacco notes, for a lusty, sweet, leathery base. Bulgarian Rose absolute rounds out the center of the scent, and top notes of saffron and black pepper add a gentle spice. The scent, based in organic grape alcohol, resides somewhere between male and female, perhaps more on the masculine end of the spectrum, but still appropriate for women who prefer a more gender-neutral perfume. All of Osmia's natural perfumes are cruelty-free, and made with essential oils, CO2 extracts, and absolutes (see article explaining these here), and never contain synthetic or chemical fragrance.

Couro is priced at 150.00 for a 0.48 ounce bottle, pictured above. Samples of all Osmia's natural perfumes are available for purchase on the website.

Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse

The United States is obsessed with zombies, there has been so much talk about them and people think they are real. They are on TV, in movie theater (World War Z) and eating some homeless man in Florida.
A fragrance company is now capitalizing on the niche, there are people who want to survive the zombie attacks and they would stop at nothing to do just that. One company knows that Z-Day preparedness is important, so they pitched in.

Fragrance company Demeter makes the most of what was relatively a small niche of specialized fragrances. Their latest offerings are these zombie scented perfumes for men and women.

The Zombie for Him fragrance is formulated with the scent of dried leaves, mushrooms, mildew, moss, and earth. In short, you’ll smell like a decomposing corpse once you spray this on. Zombie for Her is a “A slightly lighter version of the Men’s fragrance with a touch of Dregs from the bottom of the wine barrel for that feminine touch.”

A 1 oz. spray sells for $20, while the 4 oz. bottle sells for $39.50. Since they’re only going to be available through April 30, you might want to stock up for the zombie apocalypse.
I’d run out and get this, but people tell me I already smell like death.

Everyone will soon have bottle of one of Demeter’s Zombie fragrances, promises to “make the dead simply pass by without offending.” The perfume works by masking your natural human scent. But if your natural scent smells like a zombie, then you need not to purchase this fragrance.

Whether the eau de toilette actually works will be revealed during the looming apocalypse, but the spritz is no joke: Demeter also makes fragrances that smell like Play-Doh, Clean Windows, Bourbon, and Holy Water. No scent is off-limits, so the smell of barely-dead bodies shouldn't seem all that surprising.

Get this, a perfume has already been pitched for the popular show maker "The Walking Dead". If created, this would affect the marketing of this unique product.

L’Eau du 34 By Diptyque Steels The Spring Show

Even if you can't experience Paris when the spring air hits and the flora and fauna bloom (but for those of you who can, we envy you), Diptyque has bottled it for a new fragrance, L’Eau du 34.

A lively interpretation of the original 34 Boulevard Saint Germain, the new fragrance captures the essence of the original boutique interpreting the time when the weather changes and the greenest notes take over from the warmer and more sensual notes of 34 Boulevard Saint Germain.

The unisex scent is reminiscent of the brand's first fragrance, l’Eau, and mixes strong citruses with muted aromatic notes. Bitter orange, verbena, grapefruit, and lavender dance with nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and blackcurrant to evoke the atmosphere and mood of the changing season on 34 Boulevard Saint Germain, the address of the company's original boutique.

Comes in 100mL (3.38 fl.oz.) and 50mL (1.69 fl.oz.) bottles for $100 and 3.4oz for $135 and is available at diptyqueparis.com.

With Hawaiian Ruby Guava Pacifica The Beach Comes To You

I am a fan of Pacifica fragrances, my favorite being Tuscan Blood Orange. I originally bought Ruby Guava for my mother, who was in search of a new fragrance when her long-time Sula one was discontinued.

I ended up keeping it for myself! Light, airy, and the coconut is a nice ground, even when I'm not usually a fan of "tropical" scents. It's definitely stronger than my Blood Orange but doesn't irritate my sinuses or stir up my allergies. The scent is very nice. It is a lovely combination of coconut and guava. Light and not overpowering. Very nice summer fragrance. Will definitely order from this seller again.

Hawaiian Ruby Guava by Pacifica is a fragrance for women and men. Top note is pomelo; middle note is guava; base note is coconut.

It's a DELICIOUS, intensely tropical scent that seems to "read" differently to various people. I smell gorgeous pink grapefruit; my lover detects oranges; various friends have noted mango, lime, and other tropical essences. Maybe we're just not familiar enough with pomelo or guava here in the States? No matter: I'll happily sniff this tart, exotic fragrance all day long!

If you are a beach bum whose taste include juicy burst of guava, fresh and fruity. It quickly dries down to white floral-coconut combo. Summery daytime scent, light, 1 hour max and it's gone

Frédéric Malle, The Most Interesting Man In The Perfume Business

After his French education finished, and moving to New York cit for a degree in Art History  the young Frenchman worked in advertising. In 1988 Paris Frédéric Malle professionally joined the world of perfumery at the the most prestigious perfume laboratory at the time.

Years later Frédéric Malle develops his knowledge of raw materials, perfume making techniques, and ultimately learns the rigor of perfume creation from its finest creators. After years of working as a consultant to some of the best French and International perfume companies Frédéric Malle decides make his debut career.

As in 2000 came his “Editions de Parfums” which can be translated from the French as “Perfume Publishing House” and that was exactly the arrangement Frédéric Malle had in mind. Just as a literary publisher provides an opportunity and infrastructure to enable his authors to write, Malle wanted to offer his perfumers full freedom to express themselves. With unlimited support, complete creative freedom and abundant resources, the creations have come to shape the perfume industry.

The only place to buy his fragrance is Barneys New York and Frederic’s own store, you can also find his perfumes only at Dries Van Noten. He might be seen as a snob, but what if he is? As he told the New York Times “I need to work with people I like,” Frederic said. That’s a rare luxury. I adore how he does not chase after celebrities and their endorsements. Instead, if you make a good product, people will reach out to you.

He has a successful venture and an opinion respected by the industry watchers. He is in the business of exclusive scents  not pleasing the masses. He has all the right connections to make unique blends and something that comes with bragging rights.

Per Wikipedia, among his perfumes are

Perfumes
Musc Ravageur - Maurice Roucel (2000)
Une Fleur de Cassie – Dominique Ropion (2000)
Le Parfum de Thérèse – Edmond Roudnitska (2000)
