Female perfume thief unidentified

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Daphne Police said a thief made away with thousands of dollars worth of perfume and cologne from the Walmart there and now they need your help catching her.  It happened April 12, 2013 during lunch hour during, a busy part of the day.

Walmart surveillance videos shows a woman with a grocery cart reach and grab several bottles of perfume and put them in her cart.  Over a period of 15 minutes, she does this several more times. Police said the problem was she didn’t intend to pay for them.

“She gets two or three here…two or three there. She knew what she wanted and what she could get rid of,” said a Daphne Police investigator.  “She’s got something somewhere she’s getting rid of these.”

“We’re seeing a trend nationally where people are stealing these large quantities of items and they’re selling them on the internet,” added Lt. Jud Beedy of Daphne Police.

Police have seen this trend of people taking large quantities of small items like whitening strips and auto parts, but this thief had her eye on cologne and perfume, 98 bottles to be exact.

“They’re not expensive items, but they’re items that if they sell these at half price, people snap them up. It’s what they can sell quickly,” Beedy said.

The average cost per bottle was just over $36, but add it up and the thief made off with almost $3,600 worth of perfumes. The last time she was seen on camera was as she left the entrance to the garden center.  Police said cameras in the parking lot weren’t working at the time so they don’t know what kind of vehicle she left in.

The best video of the suspect is as she leaves the store.  You can see her here as she waits for the store clerk in the garden center to get busy and then walks by unnoticed.  Police are hoping you might recognize the woman who they describe as being in her mid to late forties.  If you do, you’re asked to call Daphne Police.

Because of the amount of property taken, the suspect faces a charge of theft of property first, a first degree felony.
