Fragrance 101: Everything You Need to Know About Picking the Perfect Scent

Divine Caroline: Can you break down some of the lingo we always hear when looking for a perfume. What exactly are top notes, base notes, etc.?
Renee Bukowski: Unlike flowers where the taste is received all at once, fragrances evaporate and reach the nose over time. A general composition of fragrance is a fragrance pyramid, which has top, mid and base notes. Top notes are what you smell first. These are the citrus, fruity, ozonic notes. Mid, or heart notes, are the floral, spice and herbaceous notes. Base notes consist of woods, balsams and musks.

DC: How can you choose the right fragrance when you’re in a store for a limited period of time and there are so many scents to test out?
RB: When choosing a fragrance, spray the scent on a blotter card to pick up the top note or initial impression. Blotter cards are a great way to sample multiple fragrances at once. Next, you want to determine which scent you liked most and spray it on your wrist. Don’t rub your wrists together, but rather pat them lightly together and smell throughout the day. It’s important to notice the fragrance evolving from the top, mid and base notes through the day and to fall in love with the fragrance as it dries down.

DC: Where should you spray your perfume to get that great scent to last all day?
RB: Spray on your pulse points: wrists, neck and décolletage. If you want a little extra scent, spray it in your hair and the fragrance will linger as your hair moves.

DC: What notes and fragrances are going to be most popular throughout this season and into next?
RB: We follow trends across all categories very closely and macro trends for fall are focusing on notes from nature, such as honey and rose. But this rose is modernized from traditional roses. For example, Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb Rose Explosion is a rose oriental scent that combines rose and honey!

Five Under-the-Radar Perfumers You Need to Know

I’m always on the hunt for a signature scent. Something that smells undeniably like me. And since seasonal shifts mean whole new color palettes and beauty regimens, what better time than now to find a new perfume to reinvent myself? Plus, I recently took a perfumery class, which piqued my curiosity about how professional perfumers work.

I set out to meet some of the most inventive niche perfumers, who are making small batches of perfume that last for a few seasons, until it’s time to create something new. In today’s world of mass marketing and celebrity fragrances, finding a niche scent that no one else knows about feels even more special. Frederick Bouchardy, a founder of the Elements Perfume Showcase (a twice-yearly event which is a great place to discover new fragrances) and Joya perfumes, summed it up best. “I want to do this for a long time. I want it to not be everywhere,” he said. “I want people who love it to not smell it on everyone else.”

HYLNDS by D.S. & Durga, Spirit of the Glen, $180

Scent Story: David Moltz, the nose behind D.S. & Durga, just launched a new line called HYLNDS. His travels and hikes yield some of his greatest discoveries. “I want to be able to make a story. I want someone to close their eyes and smell and be brought to that specific time and place,” Moltz said. “I’m really into doing tremendous amounts of historical research. I try to figure out aromatic cues that might help paint that picture.”

Smells Like: The accords in this scent are inspired by all aspects of whiskey production. It “opens fresh and fruity, releases oak in the heart, and finishes with rich, vanillic wood reminiscent of The Glenlivet 18.”

Palo santo: A fragrant wood with cancer fighting properties

In South America, both in urban settings and in the Amazon, I have encountered a fragrant wood used as incense and known as palo santo, which means “wood of the saints.” Appropriately named, the aroma of palo santo (Bursera graveolens) is heavenly. If you grew up attending Catholic church or any of the institutions in which incense is burned, palo santo may smell familiar to you.

Fragrant woods are not uncommon. In New Mexico, I have enjoyed many fires made of pinion pine, whose fragrance can be detected all through the streets of Santa Fe or Taos on a cold winter night. In northern India, I have smelled fires made of the incense wood deodar, whose aroma similarly wafts over the hills at night.

The tall tropical palo santo tree is related to both frankincense and myrrh, and it is widely distributed throughout much of Central and South America, as well as the Galapagos Islands. Because palo santo has become increasingly popular due to the booming Amazon tourism trade, it will eventually need to be cultivated. Otherwise, we will experience dwindling populations of these delightfully fragrant rainforest trees.

What the Smurf? There is now a Smurfing Smurf perfume

"What's that wonderful smell?" someone will ask you about your new perfume, Smurfette Blue Magic. "It's Smurf perfume," you'll mumble, wishing a hole would open up beneath you. "Excuse me?" they'll press. "It's my SMURF PERFUME, inspired by 'Smurfs 2' — you know, the children's movie with the posters with the pale-looking Smurfs on them?" It will get very quiet. In the silence, the blossoming aroma of oriental mandarin, pink pepper, patchouli and hyacinths will become almost unbearably sweet. "Is it a … children's perfume?" the bewildered person will ask. "They do make a children's Smurf perfume, called Blue Style, but this scent is for grown-ups," you'll reply. A pause. "Oh. Well, where did you get it?" As you flee the room, you will cry out, "Toys 'R' Us!"

Don't worry, if you're over 10 years old, there's a fragrance for you, too: Smurfette Blue Magic, "billed as a more high-end scent targeting women between the ages of 13 and 30." The bottle looks like a sex toy and the liquid inside smells like "oriental mandarin, pink pepper, red raspberry and peach blossom" with bottom notes of "wet leafy greens, hyacinth and transparent lilac, sheer amber, patchouli and bright wood."

Swiss Unlimited by Victorinox Swiss Army

For promoting its new “Swiss Unlimited” perfume, Victorinox has opted for Imagin, a mini-packaging solution from Aptar Beauty + Home.

For a stronger impact, the extra-flat cardboard spray (0.3 ml for 2 to 3 sprays) has been customised with an accessory flying the colors of the Swiss brand.

Swiss Unlimited by Victorinox Swiss Army is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. Swiss Unlimited was launched in 2009. The fragrance features wormwood, fir and green notes.

I appreciate masculine fragrances but this one is very especial to me. I use it frequently and I feel more than comfortable, it brings me a sense of pureness and happiness. The original idea for unlimited is to reproduce the smell of the Alpes, and it gets to the point. A unique freshness made of artemisia, aquatic mint, lavender, fir, and unmistakable juniper; this note is not described but it certainly makes the difference.

Taylor Swift Channels Summertime Fun in New Perfume Ad

The bottle is beautiful and classic! The scent is very warm yet youthful. After wearing this all day I smell a very creamy tangerine with a soft summertime musk. I do smell the similarities to fancy love I really do but for some reason this perfume just smells more put together and Modern! I love this scent good job Taylor!

However, the perfume smelling exactly like Jessica Simpson fancy love!! I am a fan of fancy love but I hate the fact that Taylor swift did the same scent to this new perfume of hers.

"From me to you, my new fragrance, 'Taylor,'" Swift says of the perfume, which follows her previous two fragrances, Wonderstruck and Wonderstruck Enchanted. The bottle features a playful swirl of bright colors on top, as well as a ring of pearls and crystal prism stopper. "This fragrance is more about my own style, so I wanted the name to be more personal,” Swift told People of her new scent.

What exactly does that mean? Well, beauty site Ulta describes the fragrance as "beautifully crafted from luscious fruits, blushing florals and soft woods. It's an unforgettable scent that's classic yet completely alluring."

We're not too sure Swift reminds us exactly of fruit, flowers, and wood, but the rest of it sounds pretty accurate!

Last month, Swift was recognized by the Fragrance Foundation with its 2013 Fragrance Celebrity of the Year award, for "uplifting the world of fragrance." She also scored the Best Market Launch: Women’s Mass prize for Wonderstruck Enchanted.

Poetic Twist to Indian Perfume Industry

India perfume (Ittar) sellers tend to disagree with William Shakespeare who said “What’s in a name?” in one of his famous novels. Many sellers of natural scents in India prefer to give poetic names to their perfumes to attract customers.

The same perfumes, carefully packed in same kind of bottles, sell differently in shops around Bangalore—some shops sell the same fragrances more just because of the attractive poetic descriptions they give to their perfumes.

“If we feel one fragrance is liked a lot by customers, we keep an attractive name for it,” said Abdul Rehman Khan who sells natural scents in the crowded market of Shivajinagar, Bangalore. “We keep the name for recognition; like we name a child.”

According to Khan, every scent induces an emotion and the customer identifies with the scent through that emotion. A perfume with a complementing name strikes a better cord with the customer. “When a customer buys a perfume with an attractive name from my shop, he’ll get confused at the other shop when he finds the same fragrance with a different name. He’ll come back to me,” said Khan.

Khan’s father was a teacher who used to do an extra business of selling natural scents outside the mosque, carrying small scent bottles in the empty case of a geometry box. “When people came out after offering prayers, we would apply scents on them. Out of the 100 people we would apply Ittar on, at-least 10 would buy. I converted that street business into a shop,” said Khan who has been selling natural scents for the past 25 years.

He has given many Arabic poetic names to natural scents. “There is “Tamana” which means wishes. I named it so because when applied once, one wishes to apply it more. Another is “Dilnasheen,” which means heart alluring. We say that if you apply Dilnasheen you will be “Hamnasheen” which means the beloved,” he explained.

Another one is named as “Alkharaba,” which means luminescent. “We say if you apply Alkharaba, you are ”marhaba” meaning welcome.”

Khan says that if you are without family, selling natural scents could be a good business. “You can roam from street to street; sell one bottle of perfume and eat your lunch, sell another in the evening and eat your dinner. But when you are with a family, you need to be innovative like I am.”

Rihanna looks shoots for Rogue - her new perfume

According to WWD, the portrait was shot by Mario Sorrenti and the campaign has been described as a study in self expressionism. The full  range of images will be out in September.

Rogue's scent will be a “flirty, sensual Oriental” blend of lemon blossom, cyclamen, jasmine, rose, plum and suede over a musky base of woods, patchouli, vanilla and amber.

RiRi's last perfume, Nude, was a runaway success and now she has plans to launch both a Rogue for women and for men.

The style chameleon said: "People are always changing and evolving and with Rogue I wanted to switch it up to reflect who I am today.

“I made it for all women, for every mood, because we all want to project our true selves.”

The Rogue bottle appears to be a classic oblong with its black lid covered in rose gold flecks. But on closer inspection we can see a true touch of Rihanna style in the rose gold studs pointing inwards at the base of the bottle.

The ever-busy star is also expected to launch her second range of clothing for River Island soon. We're expecting more of the same styles from the star, including cut outs, neons and racy designs that wouldn't be amiss in her own wardrobe.

Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud + Venustus Water Perfume

Winter closes in on us, it's time to think about buying a warming fragrance. We already know how closely memory and scent are linked, so don't underestimate the power of a new smell to take you on a sensory journey throughout the cooler months. The fragrance sections of both Myer and David Jones can be a minefield (and leave you with a headache!), so we thought we'd highlight two perfumes we're kind of obsessed with right now.

Jo Malone's Velvet Rose & Oud flew off shelves last year as a limited edition flavor in the Cologne Intense Collection, and due to its success, has now been added permanently to the coveted Jo Malone fragrance stable. A smoky wood and floral mix, this baby is not for sensitive nostrils. Spiced with clove, the experts say it's at its best when layered with like-minded notes to increase depth. Yum. Curious? Try it alongside Jo Malone's Dark Amber & Ginger Lily to smell like no one else in the room.

Another favorite right now is Sydney spa Venustus’s Altruism Water Perfume. Mixed from organic essentials oils and pure water, this perfume (and the entire Water Perfume range for that matter) is perfect for sensitive-skinned ladies. The idea here is holistic healing through smell, and Altruism is for the nurturer in all of us. An unlikely threesome, geranium, bergamot and spearmint make for quite the heartwarming combination.

Sugandam Music The Fragrance of Devotion

Thematic concerts seem to gain significance nowadays. So there are artists using their ingenuity to research and identify certain special aspects in compositions and try to present them with a common thread of idea in focus. Lakshmi Rangarajan and Savitha Narasimhan presented a concert on ‘Sugandam’ (fragrance). While our compositions are basically structured on bhakti, they naturally connect them with the temples, the God and his/her fascinating disposition with embellishments. Generally, we associate the fragrance of incense, sandalwood, camphor, flowers and chimes of bells with an aura of purity and devotion. These aspects have reflected and referred in many compositions of our illustrious composers and the singers were ably assisted by Gowri Ramnarayan in the choice of selection.

Opening the concert with a couple of slokas from ‘Sowndaryalahari,’ where the aromatic bath of the Goddess was described, the duo presented ‘Sri Mathrubootham’ of Dikshitar in Kannada. Here in the charanam, a swara string was added in the line ‘Vasitha Nava Javanthi Pushpa,’ the favourite of Lord Siva. The raga essay of Mayamalavagowla was neatly drawn by Savitha Narasimhan for the Tyagaraja kriti ‘Tulasi Dala’ where the composer lists a host of flowers which he wishes to offer Rama along with the sacred ‘tulasi.’ The exhaustive niraval on ‘Sarseeruha Punnaha’ created the right impact sans swaras. This was followed by ‘Cheta Sri Balakrishnam’ in Dwijavanti by Dikshitar which described the striking and scented presence of Krishna in the last stanza of the song. The swara bouquet was added on ‘Nava Thulasivana.’ A comparatively fast ‘Pahi Sada Pankajaksha’ in Mukhari of Swati Tirunal preceded Lakshmi’s Ritigowla treatise. A finely etched Ritigowla provided a beautiful preface to Othukadu Venkatakavi’s rhythmic ‘Brindavana Nilaye.’

CATCHY AKARAS

Hamir Kalyani was offered the centrestage, with the exposition shared by both Lakshmi and Savitha. The long swirling phrases and the catchy akaras integrated in the right proportion built up a serene ambience. Can there be a better choice than Dikshitar’s ‘Parimala Ranganatham’ detailing the aura of the Lord lying on a bed? The poignant niraval and swaras were attached to the ‘Sugantha Vipinantharanga.’ Azhwar’s ‘Karpooram Narumo’ in Khamas came towards the end.

Was there a sense of completely laid back presentation on the whole? Well, it was. The theme ‘fragrance’ needs to permeate slowly and steadily and ultimately should leave the listener filled with a smell and satisfaction without any heady mix. Lakshmi and Savitha performed without any over indulgence in their parts. However, they could have given a brief prelude to each kriti emphasising the reason for its selection. Satisfactory support came from R. Hemalatha on the violin, J. Vaidyanathan on the mridangam and Anirudh Athreya on the ganjira. The thani avartanam was precisely structured and dynamically executed. The programme was held as the part of the Annual Music Drama Festival of Hamasadhwani at the Youth Hostel, Adyar.

Bulgari Man Extreme Fragrance Hires Eric Bana

I have always considered Eric Bana to be a modern man for classic style, the actor always comes across as a well-dresser and a guy who is big on fashion without looking like he has been trying too hard.

He will be the front man for the collection of Bvlgari Man that was in 2010. After the original perfume, limited edition Bvlgari Man The Silver Limited Edition with silver stripes on transparent glass was introduced – it depicts charisma of a modern man who chooses this sensual fragrant composition.

The Munich actor has sniffed out a plum gig as the face of Bulgari's new fragrance, Bulgari Man Extreme, making his debut in a series of sexy print and video ads that evoke a glamorous, Old World feel with a hint of Fellini-esque flair.

The promotional ads have been shot in Rome, the campaign features images photographed by Peter Lindbergh and video filmed by Cannes-winning director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah) set amid the city's grand, ancient architecture.

As for the scent itself, the company describes Bulgari Man Extreme as a "woody fresh fragrance" with notes of Calabrian bergamot, cactus and pink grapefruit.

The new composition is signed by perfumer Alberto Morillas, who created the successors as well - Bvlgari Man and Bvlgari Man The Silver Limited Edition. The fragrance arrives in silver flacon and silver-black outer packaging. It is available as 60 and 100ml eau de toilette. The new fragrance--which Bana will promote will be presented in 2013 as the extreme version aimed at men who desire new sensual experience.

The character is very similar to the original Bvlgari Man, but a bit warmer witout losing the fresh/watery notes. It certainly projects a lot better (at least during the first couple of hours) and the longevity is greatly improved as well (I found the original to be very short lived).

This has always been a very good choice for office and professional environments given that one is light on the trigger. I see this as a very versatile perfume as I think it will work equally good for daytime and nightime/formal occasions.

If you liked the original, you will certainly like this one - Bvlgari Man enthusiasts you can safely blind-buy this :-). Overall, this is some seriously good stuff from Bvlgari

Blend Perfume -- A Class With Sarah Horowitz

Come see Sarah at the the "definitive marketplace for established and emerging visionaries in the world of beauty and fragrance design". Sarah will be one of the featured perfume panelists, along with Olivia Jan and David Moltz, and moderators Amaud Adrian, Jennifer Powderly, and Miriam Vareldzis.
It turns out, one living in North America does not have to travel to some European capital or an exotic city in the East to learn the art of blending perfume. Thanks to Sarah Horowitz, there's a class just for that. So follow your passion and get an education that will set you apart from all the others--learn how to blend your own perfume. You would have earned plenty of bragging rights once you finish the class--you jargon will come in handy. Sarah's stocked are gaining up in the fashion industry.

A typical beginners perfumery workshop starts with a history of perfume and the basic structure of a fragrance. Learners will get an education about structuring a fragrance by building a pyramid and layering notes into accords. Top notes are typically citrus and other fruits, middle notes are flowers and base notes are resins and woods, like sandalwood and amber. As she talked, this made sense to me; as in wine, the initial aromatics are all fruit, then floral notes develop.

"Perfume is one of the highest gifts you can give," says Sarah. The word perfume is from the Latin "per fumum," which means through smoke. "It is also one of the oldest art forms." Sarah has been creating fragrances for over 20 years. She also blends bespoke, or custom perfumes for clients. And Sarah offers "The Fragrance Journey," where she helps individuals find a very special scent for themselves.

Each will receive a brown a blending kit with 15 small brown bottles with eye dropper tops. There were five top, five middle and five base notes. This is a hand on class and just a mere lecture. Sarah's has assignment where learners have to create a perfume that reminds them of a certain place in time.

Cupcakes, Frozen Yogurt Sweet Spring Perfumes

Over the last few years, market analysts have reported a boom in spring scent sales - with the number of fragrance launches rocketing. This spring sees the launch of scents from a number of household names, with each release is expected to be typical of the season, swapping heady, complex scents for lighter, single-note varieties. But with so many gorgeous-smelling fragrances on the market, it can be a tough gig trying to choose a season-appropriate signature scent.
  1. Ivanka Trump: I had the pleasure of breakfasting with Ivanka for the launch of this perfume, and being a canny businesswoman, she said the reason she went the fruity-floral route is because of how popular it is. The color and the bottle represent the scent very well. It's just pretty with a small touch of sophistication. Her fragrance is definitely sweet at the top, but there's a warm vanilla-patchouli thing happening, too, which is what lingers behind. Ivanka Trump is the daytime of Flowerbomb. Very classy like Ivanka Trump herself. This is a great scent for any developing young lady. It smells like Justin Bieber's someday without that weird fruity grape scent to it.
  2. Alice & Peter Wicked Berry: The bottle alone makes it worth the money: a cupcake-shaped affair with an icing cap yet is looks like a pile of frozen yogurt. Brand Alice & Peter comes out on the market in October 2012 with the line of five fragrances of fruity and gourmand aromas, inspired by cupcakes, yet complex and not just childish. It's a sensual and warm fragrance of berries. It smells like berry and lilac frosting where the combination reminds me of lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) with berries and musk in the background. There is a slight powdery nature to the fragrance and the vanilla,Top notes: lemon, lime, bergamot and orange. Heart: rose, freesia, lilac, blackberry, black currant and raspberry. Base: amber, sandalwood, vanilla and white musk. wears down into a delicately sweet, light musk, with nary a trace of gummy candy.
  3. Betty Barclay Tender Blossom: Betty Barclay Tender Blossom shows, inspired by flowers trends on the international catwalks, as a fashionable and trend-conscious fragrance. Through the inspiration, it seems like this spring, which was drawn into the bottle. The fragrance highlights the femininity charm shine. Also, the bottle appears in a delicate sensual dreamy natural color and is then offered to the exciting package with flower bed. A real bold news of the spring. Fruity notes of melon and litchi are introductory notes of the perfume. Its core captures flowers of cyclamen, magnolia, peony and freesia. The base houses accords of sandalwood, musk and cedar.
  4. Jennifer Lopez Forever Glowing: This bottle takes the cake in terms of fun: this is an interesting scent, at first sniff I detect the saffron, it isn't too much, it gives a twist to the scent. J Lo is taking a new direction, it is more a soft oriental to my nose. It has lots of notes and some I do not get at all like the toffee and the vanilla, neither do I get the iris. The patchouli is present throughout but seems watery, or maybe it clashes with the other notes. It’s like being at a rave. This Lopez's nineteenth fragrance, has a similar construction to Ivanka Trump (vanilla, patchouli), but is much less floral. And like Wicked Berry, it’s got an intense sugary quality, only here it lasts from the first spray until you wash it off. It’s like being rubbed down with a just-baked glazed doughnut. Or so I'm told.

Salvador Dali Sun & Roses (2013): Solar Rose, I'm In Love

Ever since I visited the Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida and I am hooked at all things Salvador Dali. I sampled all his fragrances and then went home to Amazon and purchased them all--even the female ones. Now, we are ushering in a new fragrance from the same line

While roses are usually associated with fresh, early-morning dewiness in garden-rose type of perfumes, or on the contrary nocturnal depth in darkly handsome rose interpretations, Salvador Dali Parfums are launching a solar rose composition from April 2013 called Sun & Roses...

The musky fruity-floral eau de toilette is signed by perfumer Dorothée Piot of Robertet who also did Crazy Kiss by Salvador Dali, Memoir Woman by Amouage, Chambre Noire by Olfactive Studio, L'Occitane Fleur Chérie and Pivoine Flora, amongst others.

The line offers many feminine, carefree and vibrant line of fragrances that sing lively upbeat notes of celebration, love and happy times. Sun & Roses is in perfect tune with this fragrance collection designed for the modern and active young woman: a bottle and a fragrance full of life, an arty and creative look.

"Sun & Roses eau de toilette is that unique happiness of summer so spontaneous and luminous, like the hot pink that adorns the flacon and a solar sensuality full of energy and desire which irradiates from within every women, all at the same time."

Designer Salvador Dali has 45 known perfumes. The earliest edition was created in 1985 and the newest is from 2013. Salvador Dali fragrances were made in collaboration with perfumers Antoine Lie, Dorothee Piot, Alberto Morillas, Olivier Pescheux, Michel Almairac, Sidonie Lancesseur, Philippe Collet, Martin Gras, Mark Buxton, Evelyne Boulanger, Karoline Vieth, Henri Bergia, Philippe Romano, Gerard Anthony, Guillaume Flavigny, Emilie Bouge, Celine Ellena, Delphine Lebeau-Krowiak, Francis Kurkdjian, Daphne Bugey, Ilias Ermenidis and Thierry Wasser.

The brand underlines the fact that the fragrance is meant to be easy to use on an everyday basis, expressing "a youthful yet chic and self-assertive femininity"

Perfume opens on top notes of pink grapefruit, bergamot, and crunchy apple. The heart rests on a bouquet of fresh roses together with powdery violet and delicate lily of the valley. Base notes are more Oriental with white musks, cedar wood, vanilla and sandalwood.

Tom Ford Exclusive Scent For the Middle East

Arabs and Muslims may have perfected the art of perfume making (more on this later), but this time Tom Ford is giving them something created in their very own lab. A new fragrance will only be available in the Middle East. I am certain this is one product geared toward the affluent communities in the Gulf region.

Tom Ford has gone on an adventure in the near East with his new frankincense-based scent called Sahara Noir, using the history and culture of the region to build an impressive new scent specially designed for the Middle East. Sahara Noir is packaged in a gold-coloured version of the Tom Ford signature fragrance bottle, made of metallised glass and finished with a golden name plaque. The flacon is packaged in a gold, fluted outer carton. The perfume will come in a 50 ml size. There is no word yet on its price.

"Middle Eastern culture has an extraordinary appreciation for the luxurious, emotional and memorable qualities of fragrance; perfume is worn there in a way that feels very familiar to me. Sahara Noir is my interpretation of this heritage," said Tom Ford.

This Oriental Floral fragrance for women opens with bitter orange, sweet oasis grasses and Levantine cypress. The heart is composed of frankincense that is offset with cinnamon, Egyptian jamine and Moroccan rose. In sum, most Arabic regions are incorporated in this new scent. Sahara Noir finishes with cedar and vanilla tones. "It is a deep and substantial perfume that caresses the senses," adds Ford. Presented in a gold version of the classic Tom Ford fragrance bottle, the perfume is packaged in a fluted gold box. Prices are not yet available.
