Japanese designer creates collection of gorgeous perfume bottles based on Disney villains

While Disney princesses have seen their stock steadily rising for the past several years, it seems the villains from the renowned animation house are finally getting their due, such as with the upcoming Angelina Jolie film Maleficent. Perhaps this is connected to the recent crop of dark fairy tale reimaginings such as TV series Once Upon a Time and Grimm, and the opportunities for greater complexity presented by antagonists make them more compelling characters for adults to watch. Or, maybe after enough viewings, the characters we love to hate slowly metamorphose into the characters we simply love.
For the woman who is mature enough to appreciate the dark sophistication of these characters over the bubbly effervescence of their tales’ respective heroes and heroines, as well as enjoy a spritz of an enchanting scent, there’s no better way to store her fragrances than with a set of perfume bottles shaped like Disney villains.

These unique containers are the work of a Japanese designer who goes by the name Ruby Spark (no relation to the 2012 romantic comedy of almost the same name). “There’s something special about each and every Disney villain,” she explains. “When I look at them, they have a sort of mysterious sexiness you’d never get from the princesses.”
Ruby goes on to say that she her inspiration for the set came from musing about the different kinds of perfume women have to choose from. “Perfumes aren’t always soft and floral. Some of them have a tempting character, something that feels almost a little dangerous, even. I thought it’d be wonderful to combine perfumes like that with the motif of Disney villains.”
Ruby has crafted perfume holders featuring villains from 19 Disney films spanning some 80 years. We’ll show each one below, with the identity of the character that inspired it underneath, so that Disney fans can quiz themselves. Let’s start with an easy one.
DP 71
The design of the villain from Snow White is so iconic that she doesn’t even need a name. She’s simply known as The Evil Queen.
DP 2
We’ve never been sure if those are horns or just accouterments to her head covering, but either way you’ll never mistake Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent for anyone else.
DP 43
The curvaceous form of Ursula from The Little Mermaid easily makes the transition to perfume receptacle.
DP 47
Here we see the similarly rotund Ratcliffe from Pocahontas.
DP 4
Remember, not every Disney villain is a lady, as evidenced here by Captain Hook.
DP 55
Another bad guy whose headgear gives him away, The Hunchback of Notre Dame’s Frollo.
DP 66
The pinched base of this bottle is a nod to the high-necked dress of Lady Tremaine, better known as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother.
DP 68
Smoking is bad for your health and makes you smell terrible to boot, but it does provide an easy visual clue for fur-lover Cruella de Vil.
DP 69
A bit of fire is also the tip-off for Hades, as is the Greek lettering on his bottle.
DP 410
Appearing next is Alladin’s Jafar, every bit the scheme-smith as the above Hades.
DP 611
The top half of this bottle is all you really need to discern it as being based on The Queen of Hearts, tormentor of the title character from Alice in Wonderland.
DP 612
More abstract still is this representation of beast-hunter Gaston, which calls to mind his trade of stalking wild game.
DP 613
Shunning the more obvious choice of Monstro the whale, this set serves as stand-ins for Foulfellow and Gideon, the cunning pair that lures Pinocchio to Pleasure Island.
DP 415
The most recent villain in the set is Mother Gotheil, the kidnapper and captor of Rapunzel in Disney’s Tangled.
DP 614
Only slightly older is Doctor Facilier from 2009’s The Princess and the Frog, who can be indentified by his voodoo charms.
DP 16
Concluding our list of 21st-century Disney villains is Yzma, part of the cast of The Emperor’s New Groove from 2000.
DP 417
On the other hand, if you childhood ended before the new millennium began, maybe you’d recognize The Rescuers‘ Madame Medusa, instead.
418
Another one for fans of the classics, here’s Robin Hood’s Prince John, in all his regal glory.
DP 19
Finally, although for a villain as devious as Scar, we’re a bit disappointed at his “hiding in plain sight” gambit, he definitely gets style points.
Unfortunately, Ruby Spark doesn’t have an official license to produce Disney merchandise, so as of right now her creations aren’t available for purchase. Still, you never know how things might turn out, so don’t lose heart, villain lovers. In the meantime, there’s always the chance the Ruby will choose to expend the line, so fans of the 1985 box office disaster The Black Cauldron should keep their fingers crossed (all fourteen of you).

High-flying perfume thieves land in prison

Two Polish shoplifters who repeatedly flew into British airports purely to steal duty free perfumes have been jailed.

Pawel Lenard, 35, and Magdalena Rezler, 34, used cheap Ryanair flights to visit Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow before returning to Poland.

The pair, along with suitcases brought only to stash stolen goods, visited the World Duty Free store at Bristol Airport while waiting for connecting flights. CCTV caught married father Lenard and mother Rezler, pulling dozens of boxes of luxury perfumes such as Chanel into baskets. They then walked to the store's confectionery area and transferred the boxes, worth £4,588.60 in total, into their luggage.

Bristol Crown Court heard that on the second occasion, police – acting on a tip-off from a passenger – arrested the pair as they waited to board their next flight.

Officers discovered 40 boxes of perfume, worth £2,638.40, in their suitcases. Both later admitted two counts of theft.

Recorder David Evans told the pair, from the Polish town of Krzyz Wielkopolski, he wished to ban them from Britain but could not.

The judge sentenced both to two months in prison but acknowledged they had already spent a month in custody after being arrested – and would probably be released instantly.

The court was told Lenard and Rezler booked cheap flights from Poland to British airports in July, August, September, October and December of last year. The pair flew between Poland, Bristol and either Glasgow or Edinburgh before returning to Poland. Police said it had been an audacious shoplifting attempt.

Woman ‘Wasn’t Thinking’ When Injured Cop and Stole Perfume: Blotter

A Matteson woman is accused of causing injuries to a police officer who tried handcuffing her, after store security said she was seen taking perfume without paying, according to an Orland Park Police report.

Kim Whatley, 50, of the first block on West Cloverleaf Street in Matteson, was charged with felony retail theft, battery and resisting arrest.

On Nov. 15, the Orland Park Police Department was called to the upper level of Orland Square Mall about a security guard from Sephora fighting with a woman suspected of theft around 12:30 p.m. The first officer on scene tried putting the woman, Whatley, into custody and she kept pulling away as he was putting handcuffs on her, and ignored directions to cooperate, police said. Whatley was moved to the ground, but still resisted handcuffs, even as another officer assisted, according to the report. The first officer was left with wrist ligament injuries after Whatley was handcuffed, police said.

The security guard told police that Whatley was seen putting three bottles of perfume into her purse and walking out of the store without paying, according to the report. Sensors were set off as Whatley left the store, though she kept walking away from the guard despite instructions to stop, police said. Whatley shoved the guard away when he stood in front of her, and continued walking away from Sephora before police arrived, according to the report.

The perfume bottles cost a total of $217, police said.

While at the police station, Whatley told police she “just wasn’t thinking,” according to the report.

Police blotter information is provided by the Orland Park Police Department. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.

Helvetica Perfume, 'For Those Who Dare to Be the Same' Breathe in the distilled modernism of pure water

What do you get for the designer who has everything? How about nothing?

Helvetica The Perfume is literally just water, or "modernism distilled." Created as a gag gift by creative collective Guts and Glory, each bottle costs $62 plus shipping. If you're interested, you might want to hurry, because all shipments go out by Dec. 5.

As you might expect, most of the copywriting around the pseudo-perfume is pretty entertaining, capturing the best of black-turtle-neck designer speak with an implied wink.

"This typeface was to have no intrinsic meaning, allowing the content to convey the message. … It is in this spirit that we have created the ultimate Modernist perfume–a scent distilled down to only the purest and most essential elements to allow you, the content, to convey your message with the utmost clarity."

The Twitter feed is pretty good, too. We've dropped in a few of our favorite posts below.

HELVETICA PERFUME CRITIQUES THE FOUNDATION OF THE SCENT INDUSTRY

Every year the perfume industry rakes in millions of dollars selling scented liquid. Faun Chapin and Megan Paradise, founders of the branding agency Guts and Glory, wanted to test their luck in the industry by creating a signature scent that blends together “the purest and most essential elements.” The fragrance is so pure that it only contains water and air.

The Helvetica scent might seem like some dodgy branding stunt driven completely by profit, but it is actually a genuine attempt to critique the perfume industry, as well as the commercialization of water. The duo wants people to realize there is nothing wrong with having a natural human scent, and that perfume is “an amazing category of absurdity in a lot of way.”

2 ounces of Helvetica (read: two ounces of water) is retailing for $62. Just in case you feel like you’ve been duped, the fragrance bottle is printed with 24-karat gold. If you aren’t happy with your purchase (or if you are more of a Times New Roman person), you can return the bottle for a full refund.

Pitbull to Debut Unisex Fragrance Line

Pitbull will be ringing in the new year with a fresh scent. The rapper will unveil his new fragrance, simply called Pitbull, on Dec. 31.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the 32-year-old artist will present his men’s and women’s scents at his New Year’s Eve show in his hometown of Miami at American Airlines Arena. Pre-sales will begin Dec. 1 at Amazon.com, which will be selling the scent exclusively until Valentine’s Day.

“When we started talking about it, it was about very sexy smells,” says Pitbull about his fragrance. “The woman can wear the men’s cologne and the man can wear the women’s perfume. I love to mix [men's and women's fragrances] up and see what kind of people you attract…I am a walking focus group.”

The women’s fragrance is described as notes of raspberries, crisp red apples, nectarine blossom, jasmine, vanilla and musk. Meanwhile, the men’s version smells like an “opening act” of sun-drenched bergamot, mandarin and sage; and “an encore” of rich tonka bean, musk and amber.

The fragrances will come in tall bottles shaped by the skyscrapers Pitbull saw while traveling to exotic locations like Malaysia, Dubai and Shanghai. Prices range from $30-$55 depending on bottle size.

And since Pitbull is an international artist, limited edition versions are in the works as well, including Pitbull Miami, due out in 2015, and Pitbull Rio, aimed for 2016. Pitbull London and Pitbull Berlin are also in the planning stages.

“I think that a soft, sexy sensual scent isn’t what people are going to expect from me,” Mr. 305 tells WWD. “The innovative part of that is when you have a man who comes with a scent which I would say is more womanly, I think that’s innovative, especially when you have a man who will admit it.”

Why One Bottle Of Perfume Can Cost $440

One step into Sephora's fragrance aisle, and it's easy to get overwhelmed. One by one, you pick the most attractive-looking bottles, spritz them on blotters and end up covered in a strange mixture of clashing scents. Overwhelmed, you make your final choice, leaving the store $60 poorer.

This familiar experience could be likened to speed dating, if you ask Fabrice Penot, co-founder of the French perfumery Le Labo. Since most brands only have a few seconds to please consumers, Penot says that the resulting fragrances are created to seduce olfactory senses with exploding top notes, the part of the perfume you smell for the first 15 minutes after spraying.

"It's like you meet a guy and for the first 15 minutes the guy is amazing and he's perfect," Penot says. "But after a week, the guy has no substance; there is nothing." Like this hypothetical man, Penot says, many brand-name fragrances fail to deliver a long-lasting, quality experience.

Lady Gaga's Pee to Turn into Perfume

Pop icon Lady Gaga's urine is all set to be bottled up and sold as a perfume. During an event she was backstage and she apparently couldn't make it to the ladies room and hence ended up going to a dressing room where she peed in a bottle. Since then, that bottle has been considered a pop artifact.

Meanwhile, TV presenter Andy Cohen's personal assistants found a recipe to make it into perfume and cooked up Gaga's fragrant sample for all to enjoy.

"It's a long story, but she did. She said on her way out, 'Look, I couldn't get my way to the bathroom, I'm sorry'.She's a superstar, she's Lady Gaga, she can pee wherever she wants as far as I'm concerned," Cohen said.

"So, we have it in a pretty bottle. I know, it's kind of gross, but that is a pop culture artifact, if you ask me. That is going to be worth something," he added.

This comes as no surprise as the pop icon is reknowed for her tantrums and over the top antics.

Recently, Lady Gaga's former assistant, Jennifer O'Neill, filed a lawsuit stating that she slept in the same bed as the pop icon.

"I was by her side virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That includes sleeping in the same bed with her, because she did not sleep alone," O'Neill stated.

She also alleged that she even had to fulfil Gaga's basic needs. "She might have said: 'I need some tea... can you get my computer for me...I need a tampon, the toilet doesn't flush' ", said O'Neill who is suing Lady Gaga for $390,000 in unpaid overtime.

Greg Lauren, Barneys New York fete new designer fragrance

Actor, artist and fashion designer Greg Lauren unveiled his foray into the world of fragrance in Hollywood on Tuesday night -- against a backdrop of olive-drab Army tents, paint-splattered plywood floors and just beyond a paintbrush-wielding gentleman near the entrance who generously anointed arriving guests with a baptismal swath of blue paint.

Once inside, the guests, who had been provided white Greg Lauren overshirts on arrival, removed them and hung them on racks to dry (or, in some cases, have additional paint splattered on them) and were given claim tickets so they could take their one-of-a-kind spontaneous creations with them as they left.

As a way of hammering home Lauren's goal for the scent -- a Barneys New York collaboration -- it was a master (brush) stroke of genius.

"I wanted everyone to immediately and interactively engage in the artistic spirit," he said. "To have fun and feel what it's like to be the bottle."

Lauren was referring to the paint-splattered fragrance bottles, each one distressed by Lauren himself -- a torn label here, a bit of hand-sanding there -- and labeled with a simple piece of masking tape on which he'd written his name with a black Sharpie pen.

"I was so excited to sink my teeth into my natural territory, which is the packaging and the bottle," he said. "I wanted each person to feel like they were getting a little piece of art -- a little jewel -- so that they'd think: 'Wow, a person really touched this.'"

For the scent itself, Lauren turned to renowned perfumer Ralf Schweiger (his past efforts include Marc Jacobs Men and Yves St. Laurent Baby Doll), asking him to craft a fragrance that reflected some of the common themes in the artist's work.

"I wanted the contradictory themes of strength and vulnerability, pain and beauty," Lauren said. "I literally asked [Schweiger] if there was a scent that we could find that would make you cry and make you smile at the same time -- that’s what I wanted."

The result is a unisex fragrance described as "a combination of tonka beans, vanilla, and marine notes." Perhaps it was because Lauren had mentioned crying, but our first sniff gave us a distinct impression of salty and sweet and evoked the image of one's true love sitting in a scented bubble bath, warm tears streaming down her face and pooling atop a vanilla sundae.

Joining Lauren to celebrate the scent were his wife, actress and current "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Elizabeth Berkley; Berkley's "DWTS" dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy; Paula Abdul; Mariel Hemingway; artist Ally Hilfiger; shoemaker of the moment George Esquivel and LACMA chief executive and director Michael Govan and his wife, Katherine Ross.

Greg Lauren for Barneys New York is the second in the retailer's designer fragrance collection (the first, with L'Wren Scott, came out last November), and the 2,500 limited-edition 100-milliliter bottles are priced at $195 each and are available exclusively through Barneys.

Crabtree & Evelyn Celebrates Forty Years of Fragrance With the Limited Edition Heritage Collection

WOODSTOCK, CT--(Marketwired - October 01, 2013) - Since its inception, Crabtree & Evelyn has been telling stories through scent, not just with the finished perfume, lotion or soap but also with carefully chosen ingredients sourced from around the world.

Founder Cy Harvey's inspiration was 'to explore everything and keep the best'. With this in mind, his fragrance architects set sail on their aromatic adventures to discover such natural treasures as Spanish neroli, Italian bergamot and Sicilian lemon. These superior varieties were then brought back to vast fragrance archives, the legacy of Crabtree & Evelyn. The Heritage Collection is infused with 40 years of expertise in fragrance foraging and draws on the knowledge of where to source the most beautifully scented botanicals. The resulting seven compositions exalt the classic aromas of the Mediterranean coastline and Europe's ancient cities, expressed as exquisite Flower Waters and Eau de Colognes.

Begin a fragrance journey inspired by sun-ripe aromas that transport the senses to distant shores. The eclectic range of emotive scents is redolent of the grandeur of their provenance and rich heritage. Precious, vintage ingredients with a timeless beauty are given the modern Crabtree & Evelyn English touch. Explore elegant, feminine florals and polished citrus scents with a masculine edge, each one destined to become a contemporary collectable.

Sevillian Neroli Eau de Cologne
When Arabian traders settled in Seville they planted bitter orange trees to create perfumed gardens. Today the ancient trees continue to line the streets and courtyards, providing the scented signature of Seville. In the refined scent of Sevillian Neroli, the aroma of Spanish neroli sparkles with notes of grapefruit, lemon, tangerine and white tea, blended with cedarwood and clove.

Old Windsor Eau de Cologne
Set upon the river and surrounded by ancient oak forests, the village of Old Windsor was once the domain of kings and queens. Today this area of natural beauty continues to be a much-loved place for traditional English pursuits. Old Windsor Eau de Cologne exudes English refinement and luxury through notes of bergamot, bitter orange and verbena blended with English lavender and sandalwood.

Hungary Water Eau de Cologne
In the 14th Century, tales were told of a unique scented tonic, presented to Budapest's royalty along with the promise of eternal youth. With strange coincidence they became famed for their youthfulness and beauty, allegedly bestowed by the tonic's rejuvenating scent. Hungary Water continues the legacy, taking influence from the original Crabtree & Evelyn rosemary recipe and blending with uplifting notes of pink pepper, spearmint, cypress and geranium.

Neapolitan Bergamot Eau de Cologne
Bergamot is famous for lending its zesty signature to the very first eau de cologne, inspired by the scented impression of an Italian morning. With the same innovative and romantic spirit, Neapolitan Bergamot is an aromatic rendering of time spent exploring the Mediterranean coast. The classic aroma of Italian bergamot and lemon articulate the rising sun over the bay, while the modern accords of ginger, lavender and thyme are reminiscent of the embracing scent of the coastal breeze.

Florentine Freesia Flower Water
Florentine Freesia is the scented expression of a journey across bridges of gold to the magnificent floral havens surrounding villas and castles from a bygone Renaissance era. The enticing scent of Italian freesia, cyclamen and muguet are blended with orange, pear and amber in this elegant, fruity-floral composition.

Venetian Violet Flower Water
In the historic, floating city of Venice, the violet is as enduring as the opulent architecture. This graceful flower decorates the bridges reaching over the canals and resides in paintings and poetry as a symbol of purity and modesty. Discover a scent that translates the classic elegance of violet with modern, fruity notes of lychee, raspberry and peach.

Old World Jasmine Flower Water
Jasmine, one of the oldest known botanical scents, is native to the temperate regions of the Old World. On arrival in Europe, via the Silk Road, it was quickly adopted and loved for its exotic fragrance. Perfume vandal causes a stink in Oak Harbor

A malodorous incident Thursday left the Oak Harbor police with a messy situation that was difficult to escape.

Police Chief Ed Green said an angry man threw a bottle of perfume at the front door of the police station, shattering the outer glass on the door and drenching the area with eau de toilette.

The department-store smell was still strong late in the day, greeting visitors who arrived to conduct serious business.

Green said officers arrested the suspect, Jonathan Williams, 28, at the GameStop store Thursday morning for allegedly shoplifting a tablet computer.

Williams was booked and released from the jail.

“He got upset because he wanted the item he had taken from the store and we were not going to give it back to him,” Green said.

Williams took a bottle of perfume or cologne he happened to be carrying and threw it at the glass door of the night lobby, but the bottle remained intact. Green said several officers saw him do it and told him to knock it off.

Instead, Williams picked up the bottle and threw at one of the glass doors at the main entrance. He was apparently surprised when the glass door shattered along with the perfume bottle.

“He said, ‘Oops,’” Green said.

The officers quickly arrested Williams on suspicion of malicious mischief in the third degree.

Based on the first quote he received Thursday, Green said replacing the window will cost from $500 to $600.

Egyptian President Perfume Lands A Man In Jail #Egypt #Palestine

A 25 year old Palestinian man who has a perfume shop in the West Bank city of Tulkarim was arrested today by Palestinian security forces. The reason for his arrest he is selling a custom made cologne for his customers. The fragrance he created has the name of the ousted (by a military coup) Egyptain president Mohammad Morsi.

The young man is a fan of the ousted president but the local government run by Mahmoud Abbas is not a fan of the man not his supporters. So the local security officers raided the store after receiving a tip searched everywhere and took the man in their car. The young mans' name is Islamboly Riad Badir who owns "Al Mukhtar Ottor" or "Chosen Perfume" shop in the city.

This is a bizarre store that further reveals the polarization of the Arab people on political issues. The family of the young man is leasing with the local government to ask the security office to release their son whose only crime is finding a creative way to make money.
