Fragrances matched to your circadian rhythm to guide you through your day.

The Scent Rhythm Watch by Aisen Caro Chacin could mean that you never have to look at your watch again when you want to tell the time. Instead of being aware of every second that passes, Chacin’s watch changes the way you perceive time by releasing a specific scent for different phases throughout the day.

Scent Rhythm maps fragrances in sequence with the body’s circadian cycle, which means each one corresponds to a specific state of being; which include waking up, being active, relaxing, and sleeping.

Lauren’s Perfume Really Does Smell Like the Beach

The wet, icy weeks between the beginning of January and mid-March in New York are the absolute worst of the year. I spend the time counting down the days until the shortest day of the year (the very worst is over!) and buying resort clothes pretending that winter will end early and I’ll be able to wear them at any moment. You could say I’m proficient at self-distraction.

This winter, I added a new tool to my let’s-pretend-winter-isn’t-happening arsenal: CB I Hate Perfume’s At the Beach 1966 fragrance, which I first discovered at The Apartment in Soho this fall. At $100 for 15ml, it’s criminally expensive, but the smell — which somehow captures the water, the salt, the sand, even the sunscreen scents of the beach — is pure escapist heaven. And who wouldn’t pay $100 for a whiff of heaven?

The fragrance is sold out at The Apartment’s online store, but is still available at CB I Hate Perfume’s website.

CB I Hate Perfume At the Beach 1966, $100, available at cbihateperfume.com.

Alesha Dixon to name next perfume after daughter?

The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge thinks her three-month-old daughter Azura Sienna's name has ''mystical'' qualities which perfectly match the floral notes of her first fragrance, Rose Quartz.

Speaking at the launch of her perfume at London's St Martin's Lane Hotel yesterday (08.01.14), she told BANG Showbiz: ''I think Azura would have made a really good name for a perfume. It sounds quite mystical doesn't it! Who knows, she might influence the next one.''

However, Alesha had already decided on the perfect name for her scent, which she has been developing since 2009, and insists she has taken the creation process seriously, unlike many other stars who simply put their name to a fragrance.

She explained: ''I could easily have said yes to the first thing, but what's the point, you want something that people are genuinely going to like. These things take time.

''We're doing the whole crystal collection and I'm taking my time. That's all I can do to make sure people see it's an authentic venture. As a girl, it's a real treat to be able to say I have a fragrance, it's special.''

Alesha was back at work this week for the first time since giving birth to Azura - who she has with her partner Azuka Ononye - in October and she has enjoyed focusing solely on motherhood for the last few months.

The 35-year-old singer said: ''Becoming a mum delayed the perfume. Originally I was going to bring it out at Christmas, but then thought it was best to wait until I'd had the baby so I could focus on the launch.''

Alesha Rose Quartz is a feminine and classic floral fragrance, with the notes reflecting the healing qualities of the rose quartz crystal. It is priced at £25.00 for 50ml and will be available to buy from leading fragrance outlets from March 2014.

Kristen Stewart Goes Topless in New Ads for Balenciaga's Rosabotanica Perfume

Kristen Stewart is topless in sultry new ads for the Balenciagaperfume Rosabotanica.

23-year-old K.Stew, who has a contract with the luxe French fashion brand, has appeared in other ads for the company, including ones for their previous Florabotanica scent. But this is definitely a more intimate side of the actress, who appears topless - although not showing too much skin - in the ad.

This is clearly a shot back at her off-again boyfriend Robert Pattinson, who spent his Christmas shooting sexy ads for a new Dior fragrance and hanging out with his family in England, far away from his Twilight costar in the US.

Perfume Sillage {Perfume Language & Fragrance Words}

lalique_2012_sillage.jpg
"Sillage" is the French term for "trail". It designates the olfactory impression left behind one's person who is wearing a fragrance thanks to the lastingness of the scent, or even better, when a sillage was explicitly designed to leave its signature as the extension of a person, weaving its seductive, serpentine path. If today, eclectism in fragrance wearing is encouraged, for persons who wear a "signature fragrance" as it is called, a sillage becomes the memory and personality of that person.

If many words in perfumery are borrowed from music, sillage comes from maritime terminology designating the wake of a ship. It is pronounced see-ya-j (as in Nicki Minaj). In French "sillage" can be used metaphorically not just for a scent, but also for auditive and visual impressions. It is the trace of something which is perceived in an impressionistic way... A sillage is distinct from a "drydown" which refers to the way a perfume was constructed to include lasting fragrance notes meant to last for hours - and in the past, days - which evaporate progressively or "dry down", instead of being more fleeting as in the opening of the perfume.

The drydown however plays a major role in creating a sillage since persistence is key but it is not enough as, to me at least, a sillage in its purest form ought to not just be perceived as a cloud stagnating mid-air in a room but offer a dynamic and vivid physicality.

Pizza perfume: It's real, and you can buy it for $20

Hot, cheesy and fresh out of the oven — exactly how a girl wants to smell, right?

Demeter’s new Pizza perfume re-creates the sensation of diving into a slice of ’za, with a strong scent of dough mixed with notes of tomato sauce, mozzarella and oregano.

In testing, Daily News olfactory workers deemed it “intoxicating and a little off-putting,”“as romantic as a cheese slice at 2 a.m.” and “great, if you want to smell like garlic.”

The most dangerous side effect for your diet: “It makes you constantly think about pizza,” said one tester.

The good news: The fragrance isn’t pungent for long. “After a few minutes, it mellows into the soft scent of cold, leftover pizza, which, of course, drives a partner wild,” said another tester.

Demeter’s CEO, Mark Crames, is a bit nervous that his company — famous for putting out unwearable scents such as Turpentine and Rubber — has jumped the slice.

“This is an experiment,” Crames says, citing a successful pizza perfume issued by Pizza Hut in 2012. “We’ll find out if we’re crazy or (it) makes sense.”

The cologne spray ($20 for 1 ounce) is sold online at demeterfragrance.com.

Are you ready for another celebrity perfume?

If Instagram be true, Rihanna's in the process of making a new celebrity perfume, to stand alongside her existing scents Rebelle, Nude, Reb'l Fleur and most recent fragrance Rogue.

So are you ready for another new celebrity scent?

Though it started off as a bit fun for us and a cheeky money-spinner for A-listers like of Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, the craze has spread so wide that even Joey Essex,Justin Bieber and One Direction are now dictating how the world's women should smell.

The whole Made In Chelsea cast have just been unified into one 'Chelsea inspired' scent too. So where's the line? When will we get bored?

With Kim Kardashian's endless wardrobe of namesake fragrances continually growing, and celebrity perfumes regularly topping the best-selling fragrance lists, it doesn't look like we've had enough just yet.

Holiday | The Daily Gift: Diptyque Solid Perfume

Every day from now until Christmas, the editors of T are sharing their personal gift suggestions.

Ever since I hosted a trunk show in New Orleans for the Paris-based designer Jane Pendry of Dovima, I have been haunted by the fragrance she wears. The dresses I ordered that day arrived a couple of weeks later in a gorgeous box from France, also filled with Jane’s familiar scent, which I had to have. She told me that the heavenly smell is called L’Ombre Dans l’Eau — a bewitching composition of black currant leaf and Bulgarian rose — a 1983 vintage from Diptyque. Now everyone wants to know what I’m wearing, so I shall be sharing the gift of smelling nice this season via these solid perfume compacts.$48; diptyqueparis.com.

Is This Beyonce's Rise Perfume Commercial?

Even after 17 videos, we still haven’t had our fill of seeing Beyonce in motion.

Last week, we got a quick look at the first promo photo from Bey’s new Rise fragrance campaign. The photo featured Beyonce’s locks mid-golden hair flip with all the glitter we already suspect inhabits her scalp being released into the frame. And now we’re getting a look at the whole she-bang.

The new commercial features Bey rising from the glitter dust swaddled in luxurious Tom Ford gladiator sandals and a skin-colored dress. And because this is a Beyonce ad, there is a good amount of hair flippage.

Much like Bey, the fragrance is about “female empowerment and finding the inner strength that makes women so beautiful.” And the best part of everything is that the fragrance is said to be inspired by Bey’s favorite Maya Angelou poem ”Still I Rise.”

The singer’s first fragrance, Heat, broke a Macy’s record with $75,000 in sales in one day. Altogether, her fragrance business has generated $400 million in retail sales and the latest release, Rise, could hit $25 million in its first year.

Rise is set to hit counters at the beginning of February. Will you be buying?

We Got Our Noses On George Takei’s Punnily-Named Perfume

You might have noticed that we don’t really do a lot of perfume reviews on The Mary Sue. Or any. That’s our sister site Styleite‘s thing. But when we were offered the chance to review Eau My, George Takei‘s foray into perfumery, we couldn’t say no. Could you? So, after a quick primer from Styleite on how the heck you even review perfume in the first place, we went around the office with a sample and asked for opinions.

“Notes of citrus… might be because I just ate that grapefruit, though. No, there really is citrus. Citrus and clove.”
“Men’s soap, a really clean dude right after he’s gotten out of the shower. I just want to bury my face in this.”
“Sweet aerosol.”
“The first floor of Bloomingdale’s.”
“It smells like something I should like, but don’t.”
“Wintery men’s cologne.”
“Grapefruit finish.” (Upon me asking “…finish?”: “It’s like the end of the smell. I know perfume words.”)
“Has all the notes that you’d associate with a men’s perfume, but it’s still kind of… fruity.” (Note: That is meant literally. Any perceived pun is unintentional. JSYK.)

And finally, from Glen over at Geekosystem:
“This should smell like George Takei. They should collect his sweat and put it in a bottle.”

Finally, A No-Fail Gift For Fragrance Lovers

emb

As much as we appreciate being on the receiving end of gift cards, whenever we're the ones doing the gifting, we can't help but feel like we're copping out on some level — if only we could gift something more personal without worrying about the inevitable issue of could-be returns or exchanges. Looks as though perfumer Christopher Brosius feels us, since his latest plan may revamp our gift-giving practices.

CB I Hate Perfume's just-announced Benefactor Packages allow gift-givers to purchase a designated amount of in-store credit redeemable for the recipient's scent of choice. “This offer ...should solve a good many problems for all concerned," says Brosius. "You’ll have the gift you want to give, and the person to whom you give it will get just the perfume they wish."

Plus, by purchasing a package, you're supporting Brosius' efforts in more ways than one: All profits from the Benefactor Packages will be used to help move the brand's "gallery" space, a laboratory of sorts wherein Brosius allows the public to view his process, to a new location. Though the packages start at $100, those who purchase a $1,000 credit will score two tickets to the grand opening party. Needless to say, if we get our way, you'll be seeing us there.

CB I Hate Perfume 7 Billion Hearts Collection, $30-$230, available at CB I Hate Perfume.

Nigel Barker Launching His Own Perfume, Because Sure (PHOTOS)

We mourned the day when Tyra Banks rocked the boat that is "America's Next Top Model" and gave judge Nigel Barker the boot. What would we do with the smooth-talking, smooth-headed noted fashion photographer in our lives?

Thankfully, Barker heard our pleas and is sticking around... with a fragrance. Women's Wear Daily reports that the photographer has partnered with Demeter Fragrance Library to launch the Nigel Barker Signature Collection of Fine Scents, which will include three different perfumes.

The fragrances are all New York-themed: New York Nights, Times Square and Wall Street. "People come to New York and want to capture that moment in time," Barker told WWD of his urban inspiration. "I tried to recreate that feeling in the scent." (Hopefully he didn't literally try to bottle real New York smells.)

We'll admit that a Barker-branded fragrance sounds out of left field, but WWD notes that Barker's wife Cristen is actually a makeup artist. The couple will also be launching two cosmetics collections along with the fragrance, all of which will drop in 2014.

But a celebrity fragrance from a photographer is still a bit... random. Tyra Banks might have her own perfume, but we never really expected the "Top Model" judges to get into the scent game.

Will you buy it? Read more at WWD.com.

How Two West Coast Hikers Turned Brooklyn's Trees into a New Perfume

"Wild" fragrance firm Juniper Ridge has been running a pop-up shop this fall in Brooklyn, where it's been hosting sidewalk distillations of local plantlife—literally making cologne from the trees and bushes of Williamsburg—and running the occasional smell hunt, a short guide to the trees of the neighborhood based on what the public can sniff.

Gizmodo was on hand last week for a stroll around the block with Juniper Ridge founder Hall Newbegin and chief distiller Obi Kaufmann. As Newbegin explains on the company's website, the overall Juniper Ridge process is pretty damn fascinating, and I was eager to learn more in person:

We distill colognes and perfumes from real plants, bark, moss, mushrooms, and tree trimmings found hiking the backcountry.

A hundred years ago, all perfumes were made this way. Today we're the only ones who handle every step of the process ourselves, from beginning to end.

That process can look pretty ridiculous at times. We go camping. We crawl around in mountain meadows. We smell the wet earth beneath fir trees, and spend whiskey-fueled hours geeking out over the scent of wind off a glacier.

We make our fragrances throughout the West Coast—on dirt roads and trails, around campfires, and in our Oakland, California workshop. All to capture the quiet beauty of the Mojave Desert at sunrise, or a late-season Sierra trailhead with winter right around the corner.

The fact that last week's "wild aromatic distillation" event would be hosted on the streets of Brooklyn, using vegetation from New York City's best borough, only added to the strange appeal of seeing (and smelling) how all this really occurs.

After all, what happens when you do the same thing in an urban environment—when it's not the smell of breezes off glaciers but winds gusting off the roofs of abandoned warehouses or a slow morning fog rolling down the Gowanus? How do you distill perfumes and colognes fromthat?

Helvetica Perfume, 'For Those Who Dare to Be the Same' Breathe in the distilled modernism of pure water

What do you get for the designer who has everything? How about nothing?

Helvetica The Perfume is literally just water, or "modernism distilled." Created as a gag gift by creative collective Guts and Glory, each bottle costs $62 plus shipping. If you're interested, you might want to hurry, because all shipments go out by Dec. 5.

As you might expect, most of the copywriting around the pseudo-perfume is pretty entertaining, capturing the best of black-turtle-neck designer speak with an implied wink.

"This typeface was to have no intrinsic meaning, allowing the content to convey the message. … It is in this spirit that we have created the ultimate Modernist perfume–a scent distilled down to only the purest and most essential elements to allow you, the content, to convey your message with the utmost clarity."

The Twitter feed is pretty good, too. We've dropped in a few of our favorite posts below.

Smells like a perfume launch

LAHORE: It seems that launching fragrances has become the latest vogue. With many international fashion houses and celebrities jumping on the fragrance launch bandwagon, it was inevitable that the trend would transcend borders and permeate into the local fashion scene. And the first to catch the wave are designer brothers Nabeel and Aqeel Iftikhar. Going by the label Nabeel & Aqeel, the two have launched their signature perfume line for both him and her.

Although France is the hub of fragrance manufacturing,  and most designers and celebrities seeking to make perfumes go to perfumeries in the country for desired scents, the Iftikhar brothers took a different direction. In order to make affordable and quality products, the duo went to Spain to get their perfumes manufactured. “Our signature fragrances are inspired by glamorous, age-old perfumeries, where exquisite ingredients are used to create one-of-kind scents of sophistication and luxury,” says Nabeel.

Nabeel & Aqeel fragrances comprise five Eau de toilettes – four for men and one for women. “It took us six years to conceptualise this range and bring it to the market,” shares Nabeel. “The reason why we opted for Eau de toilette rather than Eau de parfum is that the latter are generally stronger and much more expensive; the former easily last for about four to six hours and are not very strong,” he further says. Nabeel & Aqeel acknowledges the personal significance of perfumes, and that the mark of a good perfume is how long it lasts.

The brothers explain how working with perfumes is a risky business: “There is a lot of financial investment required and we are talking big numbers,” says Nabeel.

Without revealing the name of the perfumery, Nabeel & Aqeel share with us that their product line is launched at an introductory price of Rs2,600 per bottle.
The collection features the following five perfumes:

1. Phantom: A strong, woody fragrance with notes of citrus that might not be everyone’s taste. Top notes of the perfume are orange, shiso, grapefruit and pepper, while heart notes include flint, mineral and geranium leaves. The base notes are those of oak, moss, vetiver, patchouli and benzoin.

Pitbull to Debut Unisex Fragrance Line

Pitbull will be ringing in the new year with a fresh scent. The rapper will unveil his new fragrance, simply called Pitbull, on Dec. 31.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the 32-year-old artist will present his men’s and women’s scents at his New Year’s Eve show in his hometown of Miami at American Airlines Arena. Pre-sales will begin Dec. 1 at Amazon.com, which will be selling the scent exclusively until Valentine’s Day.

“When we started talking about it, it was about very sexy smells,” says Pitbull about his fragrance. “The woman can wear the men’s cologne and the man can wear the women’s perfume. I love to mix [men's and women's fragrances] up and see what kind of people you attract…I am a walking focus group.”

The women’s fragrance is described as notes of raspberries, crisp red apples, nectarine blossom, jasmine, vanilla and musk. Meanwhile, the men’s version smells like an “opening act” of sun-drenched bergamot, mandarin and sage; and “an encore” of rich tonka bean, musk and amber.

The fragrances will come in tall bottles shaped by the skyscrapers Pitbull saw while traveling to exotic locations like Malaysia, Dubai and Shanghai. Prices range from $30-$55 depending on bottle size.

And since Pitbull is an international artist, limited edition versions are in the works as well, including Pitbull Miami, due out in 2015, and Pitbull Rio, aimed for 2016. Pitbull London and Pitbull Berlin are also in the planning stages.

“I think that a soft, sexy sensual scent isn’t what people are going to expect from me,” Mr. 305 tells WWD. “The innovative part of that is when you have a man who comes with a scent which I would say is more womanly, I think that’s innovative, especially when you have a man who will admit it.”

The PJs, Pumps and Perfume Dhani Wants For the Holidays

Deciding what to ask for for Christmas is almost as difficult as deciding what to get other people. There are just SO MANY THINGS I WANT. However, I was able to narrow that list down to a few favorites that, hey, you might want to!

1. A.P.C. Silk Lucy Dress, $455, available at Steven Alan
Pretty sure this is the LBD, er, LND (It’s navy) of my dreams. I’m obsessed with the classic shape and flattering belted waist.

2. Marina Pajama Shirt, $145 & Paloma Pajama Short, $64, both available at Sleepy Jones
Pajamas are my jam(as) and so is purple. Radiant Orchid may be Pantone’s color of 2014, but I’ve long been into the color. As silly as it sounds, it works really well with my skin tone.

3. Narciso Rodriguez For Her Eau de Toilette, $77, available at Sephora
My reason for wanting this is pretty simple: It’s my favorite scent and I’m almost out of my probably-eighth bottle.
