Perfume Spray Forces Partial Evacuation Of State Building

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The top floor of a downtown state office building was evacuated after workers complained of a strange odor in the air.

Hazardous materials crews from the Nashville Fire Department responded to the Davy Crockett Tower at 500 James Robertson Parkway around 2 p.m. Monday.

Officials said the 12th floor was evacuated as a precaution after people complained about the odor.

Emergency medical technicians treated two people at the scene who complained of irritation, but no one was sent to the hospital.

The floor was occupied by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. Spokesperson Kate Abernathy said 30 to 40 people were evacuated from the floor.

After consulting with the State Fire Marshal's Office – which happened to be located on the 11th floor of the building – the decision was made not to evacuate the rest of the building.

"Thinking it's better to be safe than sorry we evacuated the 12th floor," said Abernathy. "We are investigating to see what it is, but we're not concerned about it at this time."

Abernathy said about 500 people work in the building.

Crews determined the cause of the odor was a perfume spray.
