The Former President: Perfume, Florwers and A Scarf

Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will hold a simple celebration of her 66th birthday today while under detention at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City, her husband said yesterday.

Former first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo said his wife did not ask him for money for food to be served for her birthday gathering of family and friends.

He surmised most of the food would be brought by relatives and friends.

“She did not ask for any budget for the food,” he said, adding he expects all their children – Mikey, Luli Arroyo-Bernas, and re-electionist Camarines Sur Rep. Dato – and their grandchildren to be with them.

Arroyo disclosed that a couple of days ago he bought a scarf and perfume as birthday gifts for his wife, “and of course flowers.”

“My birthday wish for her is that (the courts) dismiss all the charges against her. This is all persecution. I wish that (the courts) would decide fairly and justly, based on evidence and not on pressure or enticements from Malacañang,” he said.

“I hope they release her because she’s ailing,” Arroyo added.

The birthday celebration has reportedly been approved by VMMC director Dr. Nona Legaspi and the Police Security Protection Group. – with Reinir Padua
