A&M Texas Pride Perfume Hits Shelves

Coming soon, you won't have to walk across campus under the Texas sun or spend a night at Northgate to smell like Texas A&M.

The university will have its own official perfume and cologne come fall, and officials say it will actually smell quite nice -- with floral and fruity aromatics.

A&M spokesman and top marketing guru Shane Hinckley acknowledged the jokes on social media about what the Aggie products might smell like, but said he expects the scents to sell well.

"It's meant to be serious, but not too serious," Hinckley said. "We know you could 'insert joke here.' We expected to have some lighthearted moments with this, but the reality is we had several female employees that were really surprised, really liked it and are definitely buying it when it comes out."

The Aggie cologne and perfume, which will hit shelves by Aug. 18, are produced by New York City-based company Masik. The company, founded in 2008, already produces scents for 11 universities and six more will be released around the same time as A&M. The other universities are heavy hitters in the college athletics world and are almost exclusively members of the Southeastern and Athletic Coast conferences.

The process for determining what to put in the perfumes was actually somewhat complex, Hinckley said.
Katie Masich, president of Masik, described the factors that went into deciding what smelled like A&M. School colors played a large part, she said -- citing deep red aromatics such as apples or rose and crisp white smells such as vanilla.

Masich said traditions also played a key role and that the scents drew inspiration from the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, the Muster ceremony, Aggie rings and the Century Tree.
