Chanel No. 1 Dad! Perfume-Maker Hands Reins to Son in Fragrance Succession

Like father, like son. According to reports in WWD, Chanel has formally named a successor to legendary perfumer Jacques Polge. As the force behind Chanel fragrances, Polge has developed every scent produced by the French fashion house for the past 35 years, including Coco, Allure, Chance, and Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere. Luckily for the brand, its search committee didn’t have to look very far to find a suitable heir. Polge will be replaced by Olivier, his son.

With only three perfumers in the history of their company, Chanel has begun a dynasty by naming Oliver Polge as the fourth heir to their scented throne.

The duo will begin work together in September at the Chanel Fragrances Laboratory, which sounds fragrantly futuristic, and is where the younger Polge—himself responsible for such cult scents as Dior Homme from Christian Dior, Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf, and Flora Botanica for Balenciaga—will apprentice for an unspecified period of time. We await the patchouli-free fruits of their familial labor.
